Furious Aussie man's grocery shop rant sparks fierce backlash: 'Get a job'

An Aussie dad has unleashed on the cost of groceries after a single shopping bag cost him $85 - but he didn't get the sympathetic reaction he'd hoped for.

The single father-of-two shared a photo of his modest grocery shop on X, asking how struggling Australians are expected to 'afford to eat' in 2024.

The 51-year-old said he's on Jobseeker and looks after his 24-year-old son who has a disability but can barely afford to keep food on the table.

But the unemployed father's aggressive post - which included telling people to 'f**k-off' if they were going to tell him to 'get a job' sparked a fierce debate.

Some sympathised with the man and said they have been left with bill shock after an expensive trip through the checkouts.

'Carers pension here. I shop at ALDI for my food items and cleaning products,' one person said.

'You have meat! I remember that stuff (I'm on Jobseeker instead of DSP). When Jobseeker was doubled for the brief period during Covid, the first thing I bought was a steak,' another said.

'To be fair I think you have done well for $85.'

'Thank God for those little yellow stickers,' the man agreed noting he scored the markdowns at 10am.

However, others slammed the dad's choice of groceries and decision to 'survive on handouts' instead of working.

'You say you want Jobseeker doubled... I don't want to pay people to have no job and be able to buy twice as many drugs a week at taxpayers' expense,' one critic said.

'Don't buy processed foods! Buy seasonal fruit and vegetables!' another suggested.

'I agree, Jobseeker should be increased to the average Australian wage. I wouldn't have to get up and go to work six days a week to support my family,' another said.

One also pointed out the wedges, berries and meat, claiming his eating habits should reflect his budget.

But this further infuriated the man who replied: 'You don't know my household.'

This left many offside.

'Very hard for anyone to have sympathy when you're carrying on like a palooka. Settle, Samantha,' one man said.

One man pointed out the raspberries, joking that they would have been 40 per cent of the shop. This struck a nerve.

'They were $4.90 so I reckon you're sh*t at maths,' the man replied.

'Was clearly a joke, just try let some light hearted humour and joy into your life, it really helps in this dark world we live in,' the jokester said back.

'Seriously though, if you are on a budget $5 berries probably aren't the priority,' another said.

The man added his disabled son has a Coles brand fixation which makes it impossible to shop elsewhere.
