EPA Region 8 staff have been out and about all over Colorado! They presented at Denver Public Schools' Summer Connections, SPARK + Colorado Dream Foundation, the Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado Parks and Wildlife grand opening of the new Nature/Education Center, and the Gunnison River Festival. Whew! 😮💨 Summertime brings even more opportunities for EPA to educate communities about environmental issues such as sun safety, water conservation, and food waste reduction. We're looking forward to more summer events! 👏

We return this week to our conversation with Executive Director Katie Morrison and Conservation Science & Programs Manager Josh Killeen of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s (CPAWS) Southern Alberta Chapter. This week we explore some of the challenges these lands are facing in greater depth. 🌲 How does the underlying approach to forest management make it difficult for protection? 🏛️ What is the government’s role? 🎯 And what are the opportunities, particularly unique to this landscape, that could result in better outcomes for all? When you think of the word "wilderness," what is the first image that comes to your mind? For many, it might be national parks — but in truth, wilderness can be found all around us, if you take the time to reconsider our traditional relationship to nature. In my very first opinion piece for the Marist Circle, I stepped into the role of environmental advocate to offer my own definition of wilderness. Did you know? Great Salt Lake is just one of many stopover sites that shorebirds rely on to fuel their long distance migrations. Across the Intermountain West, hundreds of people dedicate their time each April and August to counting shorebirds across 200+ sites to better understand how birds are utilizing the ever changing landscape. The Utah portion of these Intermountain West Shorebird Surveys are truly a regional effort. With partners and volunteers across the West, we are working to put shorebirds and their habitats on the map. Much like our Great Salt Lake, California's Salton Sea is also facing environmental changes that impact shorebirds. This recent article from our partners at National Audubon Society explores the importance of these surveys for saline likes like the Salton Sea. Today is #WorldWetlandsDay, but every day should be dedicated to raising awareness and protecting the natural resources that are central to our well-being. Did you know that Florida's wetlands are not just beautiful, but also crucial for our environment and well-being? They filter water, prevent flooding, reduce carbon emissions, and support diverse wildlife. 🌊 🐟 🌿 Coastal Resilience Program Coordinator, Haley Cox recently shared with Florida Sea Grant about the environmental role salt marsh wetlands play on the Big Bend region of Florida. A few key takeaways we learned from Haley are: 1- Salt marshes in Florida are culturally & economically significant, supporting communities reliant on seafood production and ecotourism. 2- Salt marshes serve as crucial breeding, nesting, and foraging grounds for bird species, and act as exceptional nurseries for juvenile fish and other organisms by providing shelter from larger predators. 3- Salt marshes absorb, filter, and remove pollutants that impact water quality. ✨ Learn more about preserving Florida's coastline and salt marsh conservation efforts at UF Center for Coastal Solutions ✨ Click the link below to read the full interview and to learn more: https://bit.ly/3HLfa7w

If you've spent any time in Southern California, you've seen the massive eucalyptus trees that tower over parks, business districts, schools and community centers. But did you know that these trees are originally from #Australia? Discover how these massive trees came to Southern California in this article I wrote for the August issue of Huntington Beach Living and Fountain Valley Living, which was released today. And that massive eucalyptus...that's the Hawthorne House Tree on the campus of California Baptist University in #Riverside, one of the mightiest trees in our region.

I was cheeky; I was audacious; I “led with my chin”, 😉. The line up was settled, there were 14 speakers; a mixture of Government, Councils, Academia/Research & 5 Community Groups talking to their efforts & well deserved pride in their results. “Ask & ye shall receive” is a very, very old phrase… I asked, “is there room for one more, it’ll be worth your while”. I received an initial, “like your energy; we’ll see what we can do”. That transformed into, “we’ve made a slot, you’ve got 10 minutes; please be conscious that there’s a lot of speakers & we want to fit everything in”… Those that turn up, change history….is a phrase I’ve heard more than once. I turned up: it was SO well worth “the price of admission”, 👍🏻, Green Adelaide Chris Daniels. There were 15 speakers; I was the second last. I did a lot of listening, to a lot of varied subjects & angles. The common topic? Trees & the shade they provide. I took a very different approach in my presentation… I talked about “double shading”; seeding or planting native broadleaf groundcovers on street verges at the same time as planting the trees. I showed data of up to a 32 degree Celsius difference between bare & compacted street verges compared with the combination with a green “living” mulch of (mostly) low growing saltbush under established street trees. My take home message? Street trees take a very long time to provide their shade & affect temperatures on a substantial scale; a living green understorey/mulch can provide powerful temperature reductions within 6-12 months. Combine the two though; understory & street trees & you get the best temperature reductions. Take home message in one sentence? “Street trees good, double shading better”. PS for those of you who know me; I got my 10 minute slot across in 7 1/2 minutes….😂 Outrageous, 🌱. Gayle Dallaston Tim Pilbrow, PhD
What a great way to spend a Friday! We hosted this forum today with City of Charles Sturt and 60 representatives from local and state government, business and community groups to look at the role that nature strips can play in building urban ecology. Your verge garden is a great space to plant natives, while bringing more nature into your life. Check with your local council or environment centre for plenty of info on what you need to get started. Thanks to Mayor Angela Evans and City of Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan for their support of this event. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the event!
