About us

CPAWS Wildlands League is a not-for-profit charity that has been working in the public interest to protect public lands and resources in Ontario since 1968, beginning with a campaign to protect Algonquin Park from development. We have extensive knowledge of land use in Ontario and a history of working with governments (provincial, federal, Aboriginal and municipal), communities, scientists, the public and resource industries on progressive conservation initiatives. We have specific experience with impacts of industrial development on boreal forests and wildlife that depend on them, as well as dedicated protected areas establishment and management expertise. Wildlands League is a not-for-profit charity that has been working in the public interest to protect public lands and resources in Ontario since 1968, beginning with a campaign to protect Algonquin Park from development. We give voice to Canada’s nature to make sure at least half of the country is protected forever for all our kids, for climate and for the planet.

Really excited for an upcoming event that the team at Wildlands League is putting on. I sit on the Board of Wildlands League, and we’ve partnered with the Mushkegowuk Council to present Tawich in the City, an evening of Indigenous music and art, leading science, and much more on September 25th.* A quote that was shared with me from one of the leaders of the community really resonated with me, “The idea of ‘braiding’ represents the strength of working together.” —Lawrence Martin, Two-term Grand Chief of the Mushkegowuk Council. At the event we'll be celebrating Canada’s great inland sea and the amazing people that live there at the beautiful Koerner Hall at TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning in #Toronto. You will hear from Hear from Omushkego leaders and youth, leading scientists, and conservationists. Some of the special guests include: 🎸 Adrian Sutherland, JUNO-nominated Cree roots rocker and 📚 Tanya Talaga, award-winning Anishnaabe journalist and bestselling author. After the show, you'll get a chance to mingle with speakers and performers, enjoy complimentary Bannock and Bear Paws (pastry), and browse beautiful Indigenous art. You won’t want to miss it. To find out more and grab your tickets go to: https://lnkd.in/gx7fb-aH *Tawich is a Cree language word referring to the coastal and offshore areas of James Bay and Hudson Bay – a globally significant marine area right in the heart of Canada. #TawichInTheCity #Toronto

We return this week to our conversation with Executive Director Katie Morrison and Conservation Science & Programs Manager Josh Killeen of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s (CPAWS) Southern Alberta Chapter. This week we explore some of the challenges these lands are facing in greater depth. 🌲 How does the underlying approach to forest management make it difficult for protection? 🏛️ What is the government’s role? 🎯 And what are the opportunities, particularly unique to this landscape, that could result in better outcomes for all? Don't miss it: https://buff.ly/3SbdcDa

Recently, we raised a glass to two very special people at Wildlands: our Executive Director Jan Sumner and Senior Forest Conservation Manager Dave Pearce 🥂 🎉 Both celebrated 20th anniversaries at Wildlands League. What staying power! We joined with many to honour them at the University of Toronto Faculty Club for their contributions to protecting our natural world. Their dedication, commitment, and sense of humour give us all hope in a chaotic, warming world. Here’s to many more years! 💚
