Supporting a cooler, greener, wilder and climate-resilient metropolitan South Australia

About us

We are a statutory board established in July 2020 by the Government of South Australia, with a vision to create a cooler, greener, wilder and climate-resilient Adelaide that celebrates our unique culture. We were established as part of the 2019 South Australian natural resources management reform, and the introduction of the Landscape South Australia Act 2019. We are Adelaide’s first dedicated urban environmental specialist organisation. We are focusing on guiding the people of Adelaide’s love of and connection with nature, and will practically create a cooler, greener and wilder capital city. Our area of responsibility spans across Adelaide’s 17 metropolitan councils, and includes about a third of Gulf St Vincent. Our mission is to encourage activities and policies for Adelaide that enable pro-environmental behavioural change. This will be achieved by facilitating partnerships, investing in aligned initiatives, educating about nature, and delivering iconic on-ground environmental projects. Water Sensitive SA is South Australia’s own capacity-building program for water sensitive urban design (WSUD). Every 3 years, an independent reviewer takes stock of the program and the local water management industry, and looks at future industry capacity-building needs. The survey should take 10 to 20 minutes to complete, and will close on Tuesday 12 November. ‘Events like this don’t just offer knowledge – they reaffirm my belief that through education, we can shape a generation deeply connected to nature and driven to make a difference. The future of sustainability is not just hopeful – it’s already in motion.’   This comment was kindly shared by one of the 100+ educators who attended our forum, 'Sustainability in the Classroom and Beyond'.   Held during Nature Festival, attendees connected with and learned from experts in education who are leading the way in teaching sustainability. Local educators shared their expertise on integrating sustainability into the curriculum, while keynote speakers shared their knowledge on teaching with hope and action, innovation in schools, and the opportunities for sustainability education in the Learn and Thrive curriculum. Harry, a mentor from Youth Environment Council, shared how supportive teachers fueled his passion for the environment, and reminded us that 'young people are not passive recipients of education.' Our thanks to everyone who joined us and contributed their own expertise! Find out more about how we can help bring sustainability to your school: https://lnkd.in/gytCNDHb

It’s not just during our Youth Coastal Ambassador program that participants get to see and do amazing things!   We love supporting our program graduates throughout the year with networking and educational opportunities – like our school holiday reunion events! In the recent school holidays we held 2 reunion events: Wild Dolphin Watch and Mangrove Kayak and Oyster Reef Restoration, which brought together 30 of our ambassadors. They learnt about identifying local dolphin species, local shellfish reef restoration efforts, cultural education about Sea Country, marine biology career pathways – and so much more! We love hosting these sessions with our project partner Karl WINDA Telfer - Burka, Senior man, Mullawirra Patpungga Meyunna and experiencing the beauty of Adelaide’s coastal environment with these passionate ambassadors! 📷 Claire Lock

Last week our community partnerships team helped to deliver a fantastic event at the Barossa Bushgardens connecting people living with dementia to nature. The importance of connecting with nature for our minds and bodies – regardless of our background or ability – is becoming more widely understood. It was a wonderful opportunity to see the fantastic impact nature can have on people living with dementia. The event was supported by The Barossa Council, Barossa Bushgardens, Northern & Yorke Landscape Board, and Dementia Australia. 📷 Alicia Ludi-Schutz

Blue carbon ecosystems — like seagrass meadows, mangroves, and salt marshes — are some of the most efficient natural carbon sinks on the planet. They capture and store large amounts of carbon for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years! Join us to learn more about them at our upcoming online seminar: diving into blue carbon. Dr Sophie Russell and Dr Emily Leyden will explain how these coastal environments efficiently capture and store carbon, exploring local examples including seagrass restoration in the Gulf St Vincent and our Blue Carbon Futures program. See you online this Thursday 24 October at 4 pm! Register: https://lnkd.in/gA7i_HEc
