DAVIS Senior Designer Solomon Cohen has been working on an exciting new study, thanks to a grant he received last summer from the Arizona Architecture Foundation. Reading the prologue of Solomon’s project in the first issue of ARCADE NW has been a treat! We look forward to reading his next quarterly column. Check out the link below and keep an eye out for his next columns in the coming quarters.
Back in June 2023, I was super fortunate to receive a grant from the Arizona Architecture Foundation to study two of the oldest synagogues in the state: Temple Beth Israel in Phoenix (now housing the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center) and the Stone Avenue Temple in Tucson (now the centerpiece of the Jewish Heritage Center of the Southwest). The project, titled Desert Diaspora, explores the roles historic temples and sacred spaces will play in an increasingly secular world. I’ve had the chance to discuss the work with a ton of folks thus far, each super generous with their time and advice, suggesting several potential directions for the project. One of the more recent developments has been an ongoing collaboration with ARCADE NW, a long-running design publication based out of my former home in Seattle, WA Working in tandem with my research, I'll be writing a quarterly column for the digital magazine to document the work. The first issue, which includes a prologue to the project, dropped this past weekend and I'm blown away by the quality of storytelling and attention to detail. Check out the FREE first issue at the link below and look out for future releases in the coming months.
