What are your thoughts on the licensure process? Does it need reworked? "On average, the licensure process takes 13.3 years for an individual to complete from the time they start their first degree. Since design school at Arizona State University, I've never understood why the architecture practice is so removed from the people who ultimately inhabit the space. Design choices that don't work stick out like sore thumbs to me in the built environment. Of course there are exceptions to this, like the growing team of anthropologists and design thinkers at HGA. Last night I was a guest lecturer for a class, Gradient Spaces, led by Iro Armeni at Stanford University. Iro is inviting students to question typical approaches to creating spaces, especially involving the user and occupant perspectives from the start. "Gradient spaces are physical spaces that blend from the 100% physical (real reality) to the 100% digital (virtual reality) and anything in between. Students are exploring design thinking, architectural design and technological design (Mixed reality) to create cross-disciplinary realities for users." Yes, we dove into an intro to design, AND they landed with their project teams and work applying methods that challenged them to integrate the user perspective and stoked their curiosity about how to engage them as they create these spaces and experiences of the future.
