Nice article by The Wall Street Journal on Carmel, Indiana, which has emerged over the past three decades as one of the Midwest's premier communities. "Over the past decade, Carmel has frequently appeared in national rankings on finance websites such as WalletHub, which named it the best small city in America this year, and Money, which has ranked it among the country’s 50 best places to live. Once a sleepy neighbor of Indianapolis, Carmel has seen explosive population growth and redevelopment under its current mayor, Jim Brainard, who is serving his seventh and last consecutive term." Brainard's strategy? "Over the next three decades, Brainard said, Carmel has been revitalized in large part through zoning changes and tax increment financing, which allowed the city to build infrastructure with bonds backed by the projected tax revenue of future real estate. Carmel has built several multimillion-dollar, mixed-use developments along its central corridor with townhomes, apartments, boutique shops and restaurants. An Arts & Design district with galleries and showrooms now sits in place of the city’s original downtown area. It connects to the City Center development, which is home to a 151,000-square-foot concert hall and the Carmel Christkindlmarkt holiday market. These developments are connected by the Monon Greenway, which can be walked or cycled and is part of the 27-mile Monon Trail that runs to downtown Indianapolis, according to Brainard. He has also implemented a network of over 150 roundabouts as an alternative to signal lights, in an attempt to move traffic more efficiently, increase walkability and minimize car accidents. Aesthetics were another important element to the revitalization, according to Brainard, who said the city looked “soulless” when he first became mayor. Today, Carmel’s neighborhood streets are lined with lampposts and flower pots, and there are over 700 acres of parks and gardens. Here's why: 1. You get to work in an interdisciplinary capacity that bridges different mediums and representatives together to solve a diverse array of community challenges. 2. You can channel your creativity to brainstorm ways to implement the arts on a larger community, city, or regional scale to foster the arts through: #publicart, #economicdevelopment, and #art in #transit 3. If you go the #landuse or #zoning route, you can work to implement policies and land development regulations that encourage uses, like live /work spaces, arts studios, arts venues, and community centers. You can also generate public art/mural incentives to developers. 4. If you go into housing planning, you can work to implement policies and planning for #affordablehousing for artists and other community members. 5. You can plan & implement #creativeplacemaking projects, like murals, painted intersections (for traffic calming), pop-up galleries, amphitheaters, and arts installations! I love Dami Lee's video essays, such as the one in the link below. She tends to unearth details that add to how I perceive the world around me. Through her work, I understand how the things we design and build influence human behavior. I appreciate how she's not quick to show just the "finished" work but takes time to walk us through how she arrived at a particular concept. And she goes deep. I like depth. I think the general discipline of design has strong ties to architecture, and it's just one of my favorite nerdy things to read and explore. The first time I read Christopher Alexander's A Pattern Language it made me feel like I could build a house with my own hands😂😂😂, but it also opened up a whole new way of looking at buildings, and trying to understand the decisions that were made for the house to look the part. Like, "Why is the porch jutting out like this? Those balconies could be deeper. Oh, that garden has been conveniently placed. Those windows are just simpatico."

"For Sno-Isle Libraries' reimagined Edmonds Library, we designed and constructed a floor-to-ceiling installation with 3,220 holes lit by individual LED lights, similar to a giant Lite-Brite toy. JA Design Technologist and Associate Shane Leaman designed custom circuit boards to connect the 1,088 magnetic sensors behind the board, which sense when acrylic pegs embedded with a small magnet are inserted into the lower holes. The intersection of art and culture in California is nowhere more evident than in its glorious murals. These murals not only bring color; they turn buildings into canvases.  These murals serve another function: increasing the sense of pride and ownership within the community for their living spaces. Buildings become something other than mere living spaces; they become liveable art. Artists like Favianna Rodriguez, whose work often addresses social justice issues, have played a massive role in bringing cultural pride and community spirit to the people of Oakland. Art fosters community building and cultural amalgamation. While minimalism in color and design ensures timelessness, it does not elevate people's sense of belonging and pride in their lives. At Riaz Capital, our ethos is driven by a need to care for the people we cater to. Affordable housing does not need to be; it can be a canvas to showcase the art that is uniquely Californian. With Artthaus Studios at the helm, we created the Riaz Capital Art program. Through this venture, we invite select artists to our buildings as their canvases. With the help of Artthaus Studios' colorful flair, we have transformed living spaces from grim accommodations to art.
