On 22 July 2013,a series of earthquakes occurred in Dingxi,Gansu. The first quake struck at 07:45 China Standard Time with an epicenter located at the border of Min County and Zhang County. [1] The magnitude of the initial earthquake was placed at Ms 6.6 by the China Earthquake Data Center with a focal depth of 20.0 kilometres (12 mi). [1] It was measured at Mw 5.9 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) [2] and Mw 6.0 by the European Alert System. [3] Another strong quake occurred about one hour later,measuring 5.6 magnitude by the USGS. [5] As of 18:00 CST (10:00 UTC),22 July 2013,422 aftershocks had been recorded. [6] The earthquakes were also felt in the nearby cities of Tianshui and Lanzhou in Gansu,as well as Xi'an,Baoji,and Xianyang in neighbouring Shaanxi. [6]
As of 23:00 CST,23 July 2013,the earthquakes had caused at least 95 deaths,and more than 2,300 people were injured. [6]
The tremor occurred less than 14 kilometres (9 mi) from the Lintan-Dangchang fault line (Chinese :临潭-宕昌断裂带). Since recorded history 25 earthquakes of more than 5.0 magnitude have occurred within a 200 kilometres (124 mi) radius from the current epicenter,the earliest being the 193 BC Lintao earthquake which measured at 6.5 magnitude,while the strongest was the 8.0-magnitude 1654 Tianshui earthquake. Most of the casualties occurred in Min County,located 15 kilometres (9 mi) from the epicenter, [7] which reported 87 deaths. [6]
According to the Gansu provincial officials,more than 1,200 buildings have collapsed and over 21,000 severely damaged. Many local buildings,often crudely constructed,were buried in the landslides caused by the earthquakes. Within the disaster zone,20% of the buildings have collapsed and 60% are damaged. 27,360 people are estimated to have been displaced in Zhang County alone. [8]
Communication was cut off to 13 townships in Zhang County and many villages in Meichuan,Min County. Five towns in eastern Min County have lost power. [6]

On the day of the earthquakes,General-secretary of CCP and Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered "all-out rescue efforts". By afternoon the two top leaders of Gansu Province,Communist Party secretary Wang Sanyun and Governor Liu Weiping,along with 1,800 police officers and local officials,had arrived in the earthquake-stricken area. The People's Liberation Army's Lanzhou Military Region,which is headquartered 230 kilometres (143 mi) from the disaster zone,had sent 1,078 troops to join the relief efforts by mid-afternoon. [10]
Gansu is an inland province in Northwestern China. Its capital and largest city is Lanzhou, in the southeast part of the province.
The 1556 Shaanxi earthquake, known in Chinese colloquially by its regnal year as the Jiajing Great Earthquake "嘉靖大地震" or officially by its epicenter as the Hua County Earthquake "华县地震", occurred in the early morning of 2 February 1556 in Huaxian, Shaanxi during the Ming dynasty.
Min County or Minxian is administratively under the control of the prefecture-level city of Dingxi, in the south of Gansu province, China. In ancient times, it was known as Lintao County due to its location along the Tao River. It was founded as Minzhou (岷州) in 544, named after the Min Mountains in the south of the county. The county received its present name in 1913. In 1985 it became subordinate to Dingxi. Min county is well known by Angelica sinensis which is a Chinese traditional medicine.
The 1920 Haiyuan earthquake occurred on December 16 in Haiyuan County, Ningxia Province, Republic of China at 19:05:53. It was also called the 1920 Gansu earthquake because Ningxia was a part of Gansu Province when the earthquake occurred. It caused destruction in the Lijunbu-Haiyuan-Ganyanchi area and was assigned the maximum intensity on the Mercalli intensity scale. About 258,707-273,407 died, making it one of the deadliest earthquakes in China and disasters in China by death toll.
An earthquake occurred in the province of Sichuan, China at 14:28:01 China Standard Time on May 12, 2008. Measuring at 8.0 Ms, the earthquake's epicenter was located 80 kilometres (50 mi) west-northwest of Chengdu, the provincial capital, with a focal depth of 19 km (12 mi). The earthquake ruptured the fault for over 240 km (150 mi), with surface displacements of several meters. The earthquake was also felt as far away as Beijing and Shanghai—1,500 and 1,700 km away, respectively—where office buildings swayed with the tremor, as well as Bangkok, Thailand and Hanoi, Vietnam. Strong aftershocks, some exceeding 6 Ms, continued to hit the area up to several months after the main shock, causing further casualties and damage. The earthquake also caused the largest number of geohazards ever recorded, including about 200,000 landslides and more than 800 quake lakes distributed over an area of 110,000 km2 (42,000 sq mi).
The 2008 Panzhihua earthquake struck southern Sichuan province, China on August 30 at 16:30:50.5 China Standard Time with a surface-wave magnitude of 6.1, or 6.0 Mw. It is also cited as the Renhe-Huili earthquake, especially in SCEA reports and early CEA reports. It was not an aftershock of the Sichuan earthquake that occurred several months prior. With more than 400 aftershocks, it caused over 40 deaths, the collapse of 10,000 homes and damage to other infrastructure in the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. The maximum liedu was VIII.
The 2008 Yingjiang earthquakes were a series of major earthquakes ranging from surface wave magnitude (Ms) 4.1 to 5.9 that struck Yingjiang County, Yunnan province, China between August 19 and September 3. It caused 5 deaths, 130 injuries, and RMB 2.7 billion in direct economic damage. USGS put the magnitude of the strongest one to Mw 6.0.
Li County or Lixian is an administrative division of the prefecture-level city of Longnan in southeastern Gansu, a northwestern province of China. The 2010 Chinese census found a population of 458,237, a decline of around 25,000 from the year 2000 but still placing it second in size within its prefecture.
The 2012 Yangzhou earthquake occurred in Jiangsu Province of the People's Republic of China at 20:11 (UTC+8) in Yangzhou on July 20.
The 2014 Ludian earthquake struck Ludian County, Yunnan, China, with a moment magnitude of 6.1 on 3 August. The earthquake killed at least 615 people, injuring at least 2,400 others. At least 114 people remained missing. Over 12,000 houses collapsed and 30,000 were damaged. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 29 km (18 mi) west-southwest of Zhaotong city at 16:30 local time (08:30 UTC).

The 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake occurred on 8 August 2017, in Zhangzha Town, Jiuzhaigou County, Ngawa Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China. The earthquake was registered at Ms 7.0 and killed at least 25 people in the mountainous region of northern Sichuan.
The 2017 Jinghe earthquake occurred at 07:27 China Standard Time on 9 August 2017, in Jinghe County, Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, with magnitude 6.6 and depth 11 kilometres. The epicentre was 44.27°N 82.89°E. Most cities in northern Xinjiang felt the quake. This earthquake occurred on the Tian Shan seismic zone. There was no direct relationship to the earthquake in Jiuzhaigou County that occurred the previous day.
The Haiyuan Fault is a major active intracontinental strike-slip (sinistral) fault in Central Asia.
The 2021 Luxian earthquake was a damaging seismic event occurring in the early hours of September 16 at 04:33 China Standard Time. The surface wave magnitude (Ms ) 6.0 or moment magnitude (Mw ) 5.4 earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 7.5 km and severe shaking in an area of 4,000 square kilometers was assigned a maximum intensity of VIII on the China seismic intensity scale. Three people were killed and 146 injured when the earthquake struck Lu County, Luzhou, Sichuan Province. At least 36,800 buildings were affected, 7,800 of them seriously damaged or completely destroyed, causing about a quarter of a billion dollars worth of damage.
On January 8, 2022, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Menyuan County, Qinghai Province near the border with Gansu Province, China. It was the largest earthquake in China since the 2021 Maduo earthquake.
On June 1, 2022, a moment magnitude (Mw ) 5.8 or surface-wave magnitude (Ms ) 6.1 earthquake struck Lushan County in Ya'an, Sichuan Province, China. At least four people were killed and 42 were injured. The earthquake had a maximum intensity of VIII on the China seismic intensity scale, causing damage to many homes and triggering rockslides.
A Mw 6.7 earthquake struck Luding County in Sichuan province, China on 5 September 2022 at 12:52:19 local time. The epicenter was located 226 km (140 mi) from Chengdu, or 43 km (27 mi) southeast of Kangding. Ninety-three people died, 424 were injured and 24 remained missing. More than 13,000 homes and other infrastructure were damaged or destroyed. It was the largest earthquake to strike the province since 2017.
On 18 December 2023 at around 23:59:30 CST, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9–6.2 struck Jishishan County, in Gansu Province, China. The shallow thrust faulting earthquake struck a densely populated area on the border between the provinces of Gansu and Qinghai. One hundred and fifty-one people died and 982 others were injured. This made it China's deadliest earthquake since the 2014 Ludian earthquake.
On 23 January 2024, at 02:09 CST, a Ms 7.1 or Mw 7.0 earthquake occurred in Uqturpan County, also known as Wushi County, in Xinjiang, China, near the border with Kyrgyzstan.
