Live pigs

Live pigs are usually six months old and ready for slaughter. There are clear cycles on the pig market since, unlike the market for live cattle, farmers are barely able to react to price fluctuations since the slaughter of pigs ready for slaughter can neither be sped up nor slowed down. A sow can give birth to piglets twice a year. After a pregnancy lasting 3.5 months a litter of between 9 and 10 piglets is usually born. These are suckled for 3 to 4 weeks before they are fattened to the optimal slaughter weight of around 254 pounds in around 5 months. They are mainly fed grain with protein supplements. Around 90 kilos of meat are produced from the 254 pounds that the live pig weighs before it is slaughtered.

The largest consumer of pork is China, followed by the EU and the USA. The EU is also the largest exporter of pork, while Japan imports the most.
