Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure) is a great product that we utilize for deploying VMs, integrating SSO within applications, managing users, groups, and inboxes, and more. While the online software is not always intuitive for administrators to use (the UI changes frequently) and the name change caused a great amount of confusion, the product is solid, mature, and most of all does the job in all the categories mentioned above.
  • User and group management
  • VM management and deployment
  • SSO integration app store
  • Intune and MDM
Microsoft Entra ID is well suited for most organizations who want a cloud based AD solution that allows administrators to manage users, spin up VMs, and integrate their internal applications with SSO. The software may not be well suited for businesses that use other softwares to do any of the tasks mentioned above, as they may not get their full money's worth.

  • Consolidating software stack
  • Increasing automation
  • Reducing the amount of passwords users have to remember with SSO (reduces help desk tickets)
At the company I work at now, our identity is managed exclusively in the cloud. We have all user management and VMs hosted through Microsoft, not internally. We utilize the full Microsoft cloud suite for SSO, user management, and VM deployment. We utilize Intune in the cloud for device MDM and application management.
Yes, we utilize Entra ID to secure non-Microsoft applications. This is done by eliminating additional password requirements for the end users and having them use Microsoft's SSO system which reduces password forgetting and additional weak passwords for vendors that may not have as strict password requirements. We utilize Intune to push applications to devices securely.
We connect quite a few applications to Entra ID. We utilize the entire Zscaler suite (ZIA, ZPA, ZDX) along with Salesforce and other smaller applications.
During the deployment of Entra ID we noticed that end users are much more receptive to the application SSO portal than originally thought. They enjoy portal that allows usage of all relevant applications with one username and password. Productivity has been up for IT staff and end users as password reset and account issue tickets decline.
Selecting Microsoft Entra ID is a good choice over Okta if you already utilize parts of the Microsoft Suite. It is a solid competitor and if your business is already paying for Microsoft products, why not use it? Okta is a great competitor, but simply already using Microsoft products gives Entra ID the edge.

I help administer the identity use cases for Microsoft Entra ID. We use it as our primary identity in a hybrid configuration with our on-prem Active Directory. This also provides the base for our Office 365 products.
  • Foundation for O365.
  • Mechanism for modern authentication (SSO, SAML, OAuth, OIDC).
  • Feature-rich with controls like Conditional Access to enforce MFA and other access restrictions to company applications.
If you are using Active Directory as your primary identity and want a way to enhance it for modern or cloud identity scenarios then this is a great product to interface to that. Also if you are interested in Office 365 products it becomes the most obvious choice since it is very integrated. If you are not interested in O365, then paying for the additional licensing to get all of the Entra ID features may not make as much sense for you.

  • Have been able to modernize SSO from ADFS to save on configuration and server management.
  • Modernize MFA options over legacy onprem solutions and replace other products/expenses.
  • Seamlessly expand AD into the public cloud space to use established identities for those use cases.
We use Active Directory for our underlying identity and integrate Entra ID into that. We have on-prem data centers as well as public cloud configurations using these technologies to underpin our identity.
We use Entra ID as our primary means of integrating our identity with many products, both legacy on-prem as well as other cloud SaaS solutions. This allows SSO and Multifactor abilities to monitor and protect.
Cloud products like Workday and Salesforce work well with Entra ID as well as on-prem versions of Jira and Confluence.
User experience is streamlined by the use of Entra ID to protect our applications and provide SSO features that users expect.
Okta appears to be a capable product, but if you are using O365 or Azure, the licensing doesn't make sense.

This is used to manage our user identity. Identity is to control access to most applications that are used by out users. There are many related features like Conditional Access that enforce policies for applications like devices, location, multi factor and other similar controls.

The integration between Entra ID and Microsoft 365 products is very compelling. While we do enhance some controls with other 3rd parties the core functionally is provided by Entra ID.
No
  • Integration with Other Systems
Licensing to bundle Microsoft 365 with Entra ID is very compelling.
Review other providers features and licensing as it would relate to Microsoft 365.
  • Implemented in-house
Change management was a minor issue with the implementation
Often the hardest part of implantations like these is to identity where impacts are and working with teams to help minimize negative impacts.
  • Communication
  • Instructions for configurating MFA
  • Online Training
Most training was internally produced
There is a lot of flexibility with how you can implement and configure Entra ID for various use cases and policies.
Just spend some time reading thru Microsoft learn articles and do some testing for pilot user groups.
Some - we have done small customizations to the interface
The only customization we've done is inserting some company logos in place of the default Microsoft logos.
No - we have not done any custom code
Microsoft support seems easily challenged by complex support issues. However other mechanisms give us ability to contact other engineers that can provide better support at a higher architectural perspective.
We get premium support as part of our bundle Microsoft licensing agreement.
No
When we leverage resources that can give us more customized support like MTC we've have access to resources that do provide exceptional expertise.
It has a lot of features. It's not too difficult to get basic configuration in place.
  • Syncing your onprem AD identity
  • Configuring Basic Conditional Access policies to enforce MFA
  • More advanced Conditional Access polices are complex
Yes
Scalability is pretty trival for Entra ID. It's not difficult to manage a few or many accounts.
There has been a handful of outages but they have been either minimal or rarely severe.
I could probably rate this a 10 but I'm always conservative on giving out perfect scored bt performance has not been a problem for us using Entra ID.

We need to manage many discreet groups of people and their access to systems and licensing base on multiple criteria. We have staff who are various kinds of employees as well as volunteers. In addition to our staff/volunteers we also have associates that are involved but do not need the full spectrum of Microsoft 365 services. Additionally we have an intranet and hundreds of teams that need access permissions based on identity. A tool like Microsoft Entra ID is essential to managing this successfully.
  • Assign users into groups dynamically based on user profile details.
  • Secure authentication using easy app based MFA.
  • User authentication intelligence that identifies unusual behavior and flags of blocks suspicious login attempts.
  • Manage permissions for sensitive internal resources like the internet or project teams.
  • Automatically assign licenses based on user properties or group membership
If you have many users and need to separate them into groups with access that changes based on their role or status, I think dynamic groups handles this brilliantly.

Creating a secure environment where identify and access are highly secure and authenticated is very easy to manage and user.

It also allows for various levels of administrative access. You can give certain people access to user administration without having to give them access to other administrative functions.

In my experience, there really isn’t a size or scope of company that could not benefit from Microsoft Entra ID.

  • Despite many attempts, bad actors have yet to cause our company harm from unauthorized access. Microsoft Entra ID has always prevented access.
  • It has streamlined our permissions and access management. We now save time and have accurate groups.
  • We are an organization that needs security and Microsoft Entra ID has certainly provided the level of security and confidence we need.
We used to use it on-prem but migrated to the cloud 7 years ago and it was absolutely worth it. For a short time were a hybrid environment but I don’t recommend that. The migration was a bit challenging but I expect that to be better now. In my opinion, using a good partner to help with the migration is a key to success.
We use Microsoft Entra ID to secure access to a few third party systems/apps using SSO. The user experience is very good but the setup process can be a challenge. It’s a little tedious and depending on how good the third party documentation and support is will make a huge difference.
Egencia, Virtous CRM, Ramp, LinkedIn Learning
Our staff and users have become far more secure and confident using our system. We have had far fewer issues with access problems and password issues. Setting up MFA for users could be a bit better but given what it does the process is well worth the slight hassle it is for users the one time they need to do it.

I think if you are comfortable with technology and can teach yourself, you can use it. It is not the most intuitive system out there but the documentation and other resources available make it fairly straight forward to find answers to questions you may have. For more advanced functionality, I think you would need to be much more comfortable with the Microsoft environment and at times Powershell.
  • Securely sign in our staff, but keep out bad actors
  • Assign staff to the right groups, granting them access to the Teams and Intranet sites they need.
  • Assign the correct licenses to staff based on their user profile (Department, Employee ID).
  • We have not ventured out of the norm
  • We hope to implement Conditional Access device management where they can only use Microsoft 365 on approved managed computers.
It has been an essential tool and we have had very few problems using it. Nothing comes close that I have seen, though given how well it has worked out for us I really don't look very hard. The value is extremely high when you consider you get Microsoft Entra ID and the rest of the Microsoft 365 platform for one price.

Security was paramount. Whatever we chose had to provide a secure environment that was not a huge challenge or hassle for our users or our IT team.
I would not change anything. We are very pleased with how it went.
Make sure you use a good partner. Our implementation was a bit longer and more problematic than we expected. Our partner got it done, but, in my opinion, some of their inexperience and staffing issues were evident.
  • Third-party professional services
I prefer not to say.
Yes
We were on-prem, then moved to hybrid for a year or two, then went full cloud.
Change management was a minor issue with the implementation
In my opinion, invest a LOT into resources to help your staff with the changes. Any system will affect some users and create problems. Identity Management is not one that you want people to struggle with for very long.
  • Using MFA
  • Remembering their password
  • changing their password or resetting their password if they forgot
I think it can be hard to manage, but only because it is so big. Any time you have a lot you can do the management of it gets harder. They do a good job making it good to use and document the product very well.
  • MFA authentication using the Authenticator App
  • Create and use dynamic groups
  • Assign licenses using dynamic groups
  • The initial setup of MFA is a bit tricky for non-technical people. But they all got it eventually.
Yes
It is very limited, but good for a few core functions like user status, block accounts, look up details on profiles.
