Don’t miss this, especially if you source from or work with small-scale fisheries! 🐟🐟🐟
Have you heard about our new webinar series, 'Reel Talk' ? In the midst of a public consultation on our standard, we wanted to provide people with the opportunity to learn more and ask questions to us directly. These webinars will give you a chance to engage with the Community Catch development team as well as hearing from our guest speakers. These speakers will enlighten you with first-hand experience from our ongoing pilot fisheries, as well as motivations for engaging with Community Catch as a market player. We are hosting two identical webinars focussed on markets/supply chains, and two identical webinars focussed on producers. Whilst there will be a slight focus for these respective stakeholders, everyone is welcome. Please see the links below to sign up to one of the webinars, and also check out our public consultation webpage here: https://lnkd.in/evQGPjE4 We look forward to engaging with you! Check out this insightful update on a recent Sea Pact funded project! 🦀
This is a great example of seafood companies, through the precompetitive collaboration Sea Pact, investing to improve management and conservation of fisheries. Crustacean fisheries are the last hold-out - still using size to approximate age. The Sea Pact-funded study was part of an ongoing effort by Otoliths-Lada Canada CEO and Chief Scientist Raouf Kilada to find a more accurate method to age crustaceans... https://lnkd.in/exN3TUGN

Have you ever seen the stomach teeth (aka ossicles) of a blue crab? Or a bigger question - why would you want to? Well gastric mill ossicles may hold the key to better age determination in crab species. Sea Pact recently funded Raouf Kilada to investigate an innovative method to determine crab age by analyzing rings in ossicles, similar to how age determined in some fish species by counting rings in otoliths (aka ear bones). 🦀 Who cares about crab age? Well age is a critical component of stock assessments so accurate age data contributes to robust, informed stock assessments. 📰 Read more about Raouf's research and the preliminary results in Sea Pact's latest newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eXwYT7Gu 📥 Subscribe here if not already: https://lnkd.in/gT7_KHXm 📷 : Thin section of female blue crab's ossicles showing showing growth bands in red dots with green dot representing year 1.

Let's celebrate World Tuna Day! Sustainability of #tuna #fisheries is top strategic priority for Sea Pact members with members taking actions to support sustainability improvements in tuna fisheries. One example - the majority of Sea Pact members aggregated all of their tuna source fisheries data in order to identify priority improvement opportunities. After reviewing the data, Sea Pact's 2024 Project Funding Guidelines were updated to specifically request proposals related to electronic monitoring, data collection, and bycatch mitigation in longline yellowfin tuna fisheries to be considered for Sea Pact grant funding. This exercise was also an opportunity for members share with each other some of the challenges and approaches related to collecting source fishery data. Happy #worldtunaday!

Last week Sea Pact participated in the 4th Annual Latin American Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Summit hosted by COMEPESCA AC and Pesca Con Futuro. During the Summit, we joined Seafood Legacy and COMEPESCA AC on a panel facilitated by the Walton Family Foundation to discuss pre-competitive collaborations addressing sustainability challenges. Some takeaways from the Summit: - There are A LOT of different initiatives driving impactful sustainability outcomes across Latin America, from technology uptake to supply chain collaborations, many good things happening on the ground/water. -Prioritization is key to the success of any collaboration addressing seafood sustainability. There are many issues facing environmental and social responsibility and any path forward will require organization to increase impact and prevent scope-creep, and may vary depending on where stakeholders sit in the value chain. -Bottom-up (producer/harvester/fisher) solutions to sustainability challenges, along with market engagement efforts (top down), are vital successful long-term sustainability outcomes. Thank you again to the organizers for such a great event!
