Nathan Strout puts together helpful "Spotlight" Features for SeafoodSource newsletter subscribers (free) with an introduction and a cluster of articles and content that allow the reader to go a little deeper on an issue. Today's highlighted Oceana's poll on consumer support for expanded traceability and transparency in seafood and some related topics. https://lnkd.in/gmA5k6Ub
About us
Seafood2030 is interested in the intentional design and evaluation of the sustainable seafood "system" or the collective impact of sustainability efforts in seafood. The organic growth of efforts in sustainable seafood has led to inefficiencies and unnecessary complexity in the seafood industry's journey toward greater sustainability. The ability to address inefficiencies and strategic dilemmas in the system is the greatest opportunity to increase the uptake of sustainable practices and ability to address new social and environmental challenges facing seafood.

Seafood2030 is a big fan of SFP's Target 75 - one of the few system-wide or collective impact goals in seafood. We're also big fans of good news about seafood sustainability! Thanks Sea Pact and Acme Smoked Fish Corp for taking a few deep breaths and writing a very thoughtful op-ed on the "Chevron decision" where the Supreme Court ruled in favor of New England herring harvesters who felt overly burdened by the requirements to pay for at-sea monitors. Thank you Melanie Siggs, the Iceland Ocean Cluster, and The Namibian Ocean Cluster -- first for their great work to make the seafood industry and global food systems more sustainable and second, for their contribution to this op-ed. SeafoodSource https://lnkd.in/eBjivb-f

Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI Foundation) is a great example of working with small-scale fishers inside AND outside of seafood supply chains. Yes, there are changes in sustainable fishing practices companies can drive through supply chains, but it is unlikely those practices will be supported by strong governance, reliable infrastructure and cold chain, and strong community-based businesses necessary to deliver the responsible product to market and a fair return to the fishing community unless supply chain companies think more about supporting necessary change outside their supply chains. MDPI works on everything from traceability and supply chain oversight to working with the government to improve catch documentation and reporting to community support services like training bookkeepers. Excellent op-ed from Ron Volpe CEO and Co-Founder of TraceChain.ai on the need for traceability - regulatory environments increasingly calling for greater supply chain oversight, and the value of traceability - being able to tell the whole product narrative. For seafood, the whole product narrative is key to communicating to consumers, buyers, and food system policymakers the real value of seafood. It also becomes an important differentiator for seafood in the broader protein market. SeafoodSource https://lnkd.in/eDVCcqW2

It was nice to speak with Gareth Johnstone PhD and learn more about how TMT is working to address IUU fishing. We seem to be reaching a point where we are no longer just pushing IUU fishing out of supply chains that care and into supply chains that don’t care - and technology is playing a key role but keeping up with the technology and implementing the technology in areas where IUU is prevalent can be a challenge. Incredibly sad news. COMEPESCA AC and Luis Bourillón introduced me to the amazing group of seafood companies, chefs, NGOs, and government officials in Mexico working together to address very difficult issues and make Mexican seafood more responsible. Minerva was central to that work. Along with her family, my heart goes out to all the observers, government officials, fishers, and industry and NGO workers and representatives in Mexico and across the globe who continue to fight for a better world even in the face of tragedies like this. https://lnkd.in/gAFJfUaM

This is a great example of seafood companies, through the precompetitive collaboration Sea Pact, investing to improve management and conservation of fisheries. Crustacean fisheries are the last hold-out - still using size to approximate age. The Sea Pact-funded study was part of an ongoing effort by Otoliths-Lada Canada CEO and Chief Scientist Raouf Kilada to find a more accurate method to age crustaceans... https://lnkd.in/exN3TUGN
