Seafood harvesters and processors across the U.S. are applauding the long-awaited news that foundational seafood considerations have made their way into a draft Farm Bill framework. Fishing-dependent businesses have long pushed for these steps as a means to bring seafood more fully into the pillar policies of the American food system, including nutrition, food security and resilience for food-producing communities and businesses. This is particularly timely for seafood, as U.S. harvesters and processors grapple with market instability and coastal infrastructure challenges. Several of the inclusions signal important support in terms of resources and agency collaborations that help to shore up fishing community and business resilience. While the USDA has had extensive programs directly supporting or including aquaculture for years, this latest step represents critical inroads for wild capture fisheries, and additional support for aquaculturists. https://lnkd.in/gMFd_6ZV

BIM is carrying out an assessment of the impact of the seafood industry in Ireland’s top ten fishing ports. This study aims to measure the depth of the industry in each port to accurately assess its contribution and importance. Fishing, aquaculture and fish processing have downstream impacts for coastal communities in Ireland. In addition to the direct employment each sector provides, the supply chains for each generate revenue and employment indirectly also. This study aims to estimate the scale of the indirect employment in the top ten ports and their hinterlands. An independent team of researchers will be contacting seafood producers in each port inviting them to take part in a short 10-minute telephone survey asking for details on their supply chain spending. BIM is requesting industry support with these surveys. The data collected is confidential and aggregated to accurately assess the importance of the Irish seafood industry and information collected will be used to inform future policy and will also be used for future impact assessments of the Irish seafood industry. This survey is different to the Data Collection Framework (DCF) annual survey and is required to understand the economy-wide effects of the Irish seafood industry. For more information you can contact the survey team by telephone +353 1 6869 317 or by email [email protected]. BIM would like to thank you for your participation in this project.

"Tuna is the most popular canned seafood; in fact, nearly three-quarters of the total global tuna catch ends up in cans. Continuing to meet consumer demand and ensure healthy fish populations for the long term requires strong fisheries management. This is especially true given the global scale of the canned tuna industry, which includes an extensive international supply chain that can make it difficult to effectively trace fish from boat to store and to enforce policies."

BREAKING NEWS: The federal government is ending open-net pen salmon aquaculture in British Columbia within 5 years. This decision is a win for Pacific salmon and their future. Independent, peer-reviewed research clearly links open-net pen salmon farms in B.C. to risks for wild Pacific salmon. Given the many challenges to Pacific salmon, we would have preferred a shorter timeline than the five-year license renewals announced today. Yet, we must acknowledge the need for a well-supported transition for First Nations and coastal communities. Resilient communities are just as important as resilient salmon. This decision to remove open-net pen salmon farms in B.C. is a prudent step towards recovery and resilience of salmon. Did you catch the latest U.S. fisheries equity report earlier this spring? NOAA Fisheries requested the report (put out by a committee of experts through the National Academy of Sciences) to complement the agency’s Equity and Environmental Justice Strategy, released in 2023. The NAS report details a series of discreet findings and recommendations, with an emphasis on ways to define, assess and integrate #equity dimensions within the agency’s work. Particularly and immediately relevant, the authors describe the relevance of the National Standards within America’s federal #fisheries laws as being fundamentally relevant to equity outcomes. The agency is currently considering a revision to agency guidelines for several of those National Standards, including those affecting the distribution of resources. Catch our latest policy report to read the rest of the suggestions from Jessica Hathaway on how best to understand this heady report. We even included a link to a brief and broad review of equity issues in #ocean spaces, the Ocean Strategies Equity Report.

Seafood buyer participation in fisheries management decisions can support a more traceable, sustainable seafood industry 👉 https://bit.ly/3PZpa1K. Towards this end, we are working to ensure that seafood buyer voices engage decision makers in Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs). One example of this is our Korean Roundtable for Sustainable Tuna Fishing, which brings together Korea's largest and most influential seafood companies to jointly advocate for better management and operation of key tuna fisheries in the Western and Central Pacific Oceans 👉 https://bit.ly/4cZj1MB.
