And that concludes Day 1 of Cuan Beo, the Marine Institute and Bord Iascaigh Mhara - Ireland's Seafood Development Agency's 2024 cultch deployment! ✅ 36 tonnes of scallop shell and 6 tonnes of gigas shell - strategically geographically deployed on the St George's Bed in Galway Bay to increase available substrate for Native Oyster larval settlement and expand our existing Native Oyster reef development respectively. Native oysters (Ostrea edulis) are currently spawning in Galway Bay and are dispersing their larvae into the water. The larvae are looking for a suitable substrate to attach themselves to and the scallop and oyster shell cultch is an ideal substrate for larval settlement where the goal is oyster habitat restoration. 🐟 Reeling in Change: Sweden has banned bottom trawling! Bottom trawling is a destructive practice that disrupts and destroys sea bed ecosystems in order to catch fish. This is an unsustainable way to catch fish as these ecosystems may take a long time to recover, in some instances, they may not. With the next set of Coastal States Negotiations fast approaching, #NAPA is once again calling upon governments to reflect on previous quota allocations, the threat of #overfishing, and their own long-term economic interests in order to achieve the #sustainable management of crucial pelagic fish stocks in the North East Atlantic. The North East Atlantic is now at a crossroads: collaboration is key for the long-term stability of blue whiting, herring, and mackerel. Scientifically informed advice must be heeded above the individual interests of Coastal States. In the lead up to Coastal States Negotiations, NAPA continues to push for fair, ecologically sound management across the North East Atlantic.

In the next few weeks, countries like France will gather at COP16 and COP29 to talk about their international commitments to protect nature, the climate and people so they need to make sure they are putting these into action at a national level - protected must mean protected! #NatureIsOurFuture
