The Darkness of Space: A New Frontier in Clean Energy There’s one place where the sun is always shining: space! Unlike on Earth where the sun only reaches solar panels part of the day, the infinity of space has huge potential. But building solar farms in space would be very challenging and so would beaming the energy back. As we push towards a cleaner energy future, solar power continues to be a critical player. In 2023, it accounted for around 4% of the U.S. utility-scale electricity capacity, with projections showing a 75% increase by 2025. However, challenges, like intermittency, remain significant. Enter space-based solar power (SBSP) —an ambitious solution to this problem. With the sun shining continuously in space, SBSP offers the promise of harnessing solar energy without the limitations faced on Earth. The real hurdles? Safety, the challenges of building in Space, and the efficiency in transmitting this energy back to Earth. At EPRI, we're exploring cutting-edge research in SBSP and its potential to revolutionize energy transmission. Check out my column in Public Utilities Fortnightly https://lnkd.in/gvgsrhw6 Tapping Solar Power from the Darkness of Space Additionally, be sure to take a look at EPRI’s latest research by my colleague, JD. Readle, on power beaming https://lnkd.in/gn-k-BVD —a technology with roots in the visionary work of Heinrich Hertz and Nikola Tesla. This includes exploring the feasibility of transmitting solar energy wirelessly from space-based satellites to Earth. #Energy #SolarPower #Innovation #SpaceTechnology #CleanEnergy #Research #EPRI

As we advance towards the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), understanding the voice of the consumer is critical achieving scale and impact. To help better understand this, EPRI’s EVs2Scale2030 has collaborated with Plug In America on the development and release of its 2024 EV Consumer Survey. In general, the survey found that #EV drivers are satisfied with their vehicles. 89% said it is likely or very likely that their next car will be an EV, remaining in line with surveys from years past. Furthermore, the survey found that about 40% of EV drivers indicated that their primary purchase consideration was clean air and environmental protection, which has remained the top priority for drivers since our survey’s inception. Learn what else EV and non-EV drivers are saying about electric mobility 👉 https://lnkd.in/gUGCmq9n

Once a budding pharmacist in college, EPRI’s Ronald Schoff quickly realized his interests and skills lay in chemical and process engineering. In his Chauncey Chat, recorded at EPRI’s annual Summer Seminar, Ron highlights the potential for first movers to shrink the technology gaps that would enable superhot rock geothermal to reach scale as an emission-free energy generation source. With a small footprint and minimal environmental impacts, superhot rock geothermal would provide up to 10X the energy per drilled well compared to conventional geothermal and would work almost anywhere. Ron describes how three important factors: depth, permeability, and reliable design, must be addressed to bring this particular type of geothermal generation to scale. Named in honor of EPRI’s founder, Chauncey Starr, Chauncey Chats are five-minute presentations that highlight unique projects, research, or aspects of innovation that exemplify EPRI’s mission and our pivotal role in supporting the clean energy transition. https://lnkd.in/g6feeHX3
