#DYK: Generative AI models demand approximately ten times the electricity of traditional internet inquiries. Increased power demand will continue to grow as #AI expands. In a new report released today by EPRI, it is projected that data centers could consume up to 9% of U.S. electricity generation by 2030—more than double the amount currently used. This report notes that in the U.S., renewed electric load growth is being driven by data centers, industrial onshoring, and electrifying transportation, among others. Clusters of new, large point loads are testing the ability of electric companies to keep pace. “The data center boom requires closer collaboration between large data center owners and developers, utilities, government, and other stakeholders to ensure that we can power the needs of AI while maintaining reliable, affordable power to all customers” said EPRI Vice President of Electrification and Sustainable Energy Strategy David Porter. As fleet #electrification gains speed, trucking businesses are tasked with finding the right energy provider. During a recent American Trucking Associations meeting, industry leaders, including EPRI’s Mike Rowand, laid out important considerations for companies looking to electrify their fleets. Power 🔌 energy 🔋 and time ⏱️ will be important variables in the decision—as well as understanding the different provider types: investor-owned, electric cooperatives, and municipal power. But ultimately, collaboration between all stakeholders—the fleet operators, energy providers, government agencies, automotive industry and more—is required for the most effective electrification solutions. Fortunately, initiatives such as EPRI's #EVs2Scale2030 are already helping address this need by bringing various stakeholders together to ensure seamless #fleetelectrification. New from EPRI's #TechnologyInnovation team! Our latest research delves into the intricate interplay between #climatechange, agriculture, and energy, illuminating vital insights into the energy-food nexus. The agriculture sector, crucial for global food security, heavily relies on #energy for essential processes like irrigation and harvesting. As climate change challenges traditional farming practices, our research underscores the urgent need for adaptive strategies to bolster resilience. One such strategy is Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), enabling year-round crop production under optimized conditions, reducing reliance on unpredictable weather and soil quality. We also explore agrivoltaics, integrating solar energy generation with agricultural activities, offering innovative paths toward #sustainability. Our study advocates for a shift towards renewable energy sources and advanced farming techniques to safeguard long-term food security. The research also proposes interventions across the agricultural value chain to mitigate climate change impacts and foster a resilient food system.
