Meru National Park covers an area of 1,810 sq km, and is located northeast of Mount Kenya. It straddles the equator and is approximately 370 km northeast of Nairobi. The late Joy Adamson hand-reared the orphaned lioness Elsa here, later releasing her into the wild. Animals in the park include lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, Grevy’s and plains zebra, reticulated giraffe, hippo, lesser kudu, oryx, hartebeest and Grant’s gazelle. The birding is also spectacular and sightings include Somali ostrich, the red-necked falcon and Pel’s fishing owl.
