About us
WorkingNation is a storytelling organization that seeks to galvanize the public will and mobilize critical resources to mitigate the growing employability gap in America. Advancements in technology, globalization, and longevity are profoundly changing the way our society operates, leading both to enormous progress and to a disruption of the very nature of employment. Through original content and partnerships with a coalition of engaged stakeholders - including corporations, NPOs, thought leaders, philanthropists, policymakers and local governments - WorkingNation draws attention to the gravity of the current technological, economic, and demographic challenges being faced globally, and highlights the promise of solutions that will help create a world-ready U.S. workforce and a thriving economy. WorkingNation is producing high-quality, non-fiction, short- and long-form film programing and print articles that make vivid the underlying causes of the growing employability gap. Working with acclaimed directors and producers, we highlight the dramatic impact of these global forces on real people, as well as the organizations and visionary leaders that are leading the charge towards the new economic reality. WorkingNation seeks to create a movement to help America build, restore, and shape sustainable pathways to prosperity and the middle class so that, as a nation, we are all ready for the inevitable challenges and opportunities of the future.

I had the opportunity to join experts for a one-hour TV roundtable as part of WorkingNation #AgeInAmerica series with Scripps News. We delved into the root causes of ageism and how it can hinder older and midcareer workers from securing promotions or getting hired in the first place. As we approach a historic milestone—where people aged 65 and older will outnumber children 18 and younger—it's crucial for employers to adapt. Watch the clip to see how we at AARP are working to address ageism and helping companies create a more inclusive workplace: http://spr.ly/6041WK9mT #Inclusion #FightAgeism #AgeDiscrimination

This week I had the amazing privilege of being with @jordan draughn and Roxanne Lorine at the Goodwill conference. I had a chance to learn about the incredible social and emotional support that Goodwill offers individuals to help them get on a pathway to upward mobility. I wrote about this fantastic outcome here https://lnkd.in/e7EUv9Tm which is just one example of how Goodwill's rockstar workforce managers are empowering individuals who just needed the resources to prove that they can find success when given an opportunity. You can see the video that WorkingNation created here. https://lnkd.in/etSSYJyt Thank you for bringing us together Katie George, CPSL. Congratulations Steven C. Preston on an amazing organization and thank you Chris Gardner for bringing your positive vibes to the conference!

Hispanics and Latinos make up the nation’s largest ethnic or racial minority - and their numbers are growing. Plus, because the population is younger relative to other groups, the U.S. workforce will become significantly more Latino in coming years. But will they be landing good-quality jobs? On the cusp of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins Sunday, Ramona Schindelheim examines initiatives to enable the burgeoning pool of Latino workers to earn sustainable incomes to provide for their families: https://lnkd.in/g4xJ42nk #Latino #Hispanic #LatinoWorkers #HispanicWorkers #HispanicHeritageMonth California Lutheran University UCLA Health SACA North Carolina Global TransPark Economic Development Region Lenoir Community College Indiana Commission for Higher Education Indiana Latino Institute

This month, I wrote a piece for Fast Company on the role that philanthropy can play in advancing workforce inclusion to help expand an organizational view of DEI. Beyond the Black/Brown/White paradigm, many other populations face discrimination when seeking and keeping jobs, including people living with disabilities and older adults. Thoughtful philanthropy that supports career preparation and reskilling can help mitigate economic inequity and inequality, close income and wealth gaps, and provide people a sense of purpose and self-value. This is core to the work that we lead. Based on learnings through our collaborations with WorkingNation and CoGenerate, I outline six ways to promote workplace inclusion to facilitate economic mobility. DON'T JUST TALK ABOUT IT. BE ABOUT IT! Yes, that's been one of my favorite sayings for a long time, reflecting my bias for taking ACTION. With the Indeed firestorm, we've been having a lot of conversations on LinkedIn about how companies can become more #AgeInclusive, and what ALL OF US can do about it. https://lnkd.in/gmKVg-fB On September 24, we all have an opportunity to learn how to do just that at the Equity Summit 2024, hosted by Center for Workforce Inclusion and CWI Labs, in collaboration with WorkingNation, and sponsored by T-Mobile. The program will include panels on: —Using storytelling for social change with Michelle Armstrong, Ramona Schindelheim and Shelly Kurtz —How philanthropy can address workforce inequities, focusing on mid-career and older workers, with Michelle Armstrong, Claire Casey and Rey Ramsey —How companies can do well by tapping into underutilized talent pools, like older workers (YES!) —And lots more. And I'll be delivering the closing remarks, with a call to action to employers to step up, for their own benefit as well as the benefits to the overall economy. So JOIN ME, and my colleagues Gary A. Officer, Diana McFail, Rita Santelli, board chairs Angela C. and Angela Beddoe. It's being livestreamed. It's free. And it's a terrific opportunity to learn more ways that you can elevate your voice and take real action toward this issue that we all care so much about. With more technology being built into cars and technology pervading many professions, auto repair workers have had to learn new skills to keep up. I’m delighted to highlight this column from Michelle Armstrong. Last year WABE partnered with WorkingNation on an Emmy-award winning show on Disabilities in the workplace- and it opened our eyes to the incredible need by employers to provide more opportunities to underrepresented adults.
"Although there is a tendency to assume that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives serve primarily Black and brown people, the reality is that it includes many more populations. And everyone can benefit when we uplift multiple populations to help create pathways to economic opportunity." Ares Management Corporation Charitable Foundation president Michelle Armstrong makes an impassioned plea for employers leveraging the skills of populations often overlooked, including people who are disabled, older adults, and the justice-impacted. Armstrong shares how Ares' philanthropic efforts are helping bring this idea to the forefront together with WorkingNation in our Emmy-award winning "Breaking Barriers" video series.
