Fashion editor reveals the MOST flattering denim shape - and it has a surprise celebrity fan
When Kendrick Lamar took the stage at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday night, it wasn’t his anticipated performance of Not Like Us that had the YOU office talking (although streams for the diss track shot up 430 per cent on Spotify after his set), but his outfit. The American rapper sported a leather Martine Rose varsity jacket, a backwards-turned cap, a couple of diamond chain necklaces – and a pair of denim flares.
The jeans, which pooled around his ankles, were courtesy of luxury brand Celine. Mid-rise, made in Japan and retailing for £830, they come in three washes (light blue, mid blue and dark grey) and are, at least according to the internet, the real winner of the Super Bowl.

While there is some debate on X (formerly Twitter) about whether they are flared, bootcut or bell bottom jeans, we can all agree Lamar made a strong case for the return of the Y2K silhouette on Sunday night – and no one is happier to see the denim trend make a comeback than YOU’s fashion director, Sophie Dearden-Howell.
‘I’m a big fan of flared jeans. I truly believe they are the most flattering shape,’ she urges. ‘They cinch you in at the waist, skim your hips and middle, hug your bottom and give you an amazing silhouette, rather than following the line of any wobbly bits or knobbly knees. They also add length and balance out most body shapes.’
Plus, Sophie finds them incredibly comfortable to wear, ‘which is always a bonus’. When it comes to styling the jeans, she recommends getting the length tailored first, so the flared hem just skims the ground when you’re wearing flats or trainers, or hits the middle of your heeled ankle boots. ‘That way, you can wear them in all eventualities.’
