Best destinations to visit in February
Chile
February is Chile’s summer and the weather is warm and dry. This elongated country has magnificent scenery from top to toe. Patagonia, in the far south, is not that far from Antarctica and the summer months are a great time to explore Torres del Paine National Park. In the central belt, this time of year tends to be when the residents of Santiago take their holidays, which makes visiting the capital more relaxing. Easter Island holds its annual Tapati cultural festival; together the whole island celebrates their culture through music, dance and traditional sports.
Brazil
While the Amazon and Rio de Janeiro can be visited all year round, summertime is best with warmer and sunnier days. Although February is southern Brazil’s wet season, it is also when the biggest party in the world occurs: Carnival. This vibrant, exuberant festival of culture is over a century old. Competing for the title of Brazil’s best carnival are the cities of Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, and Olinda. The main event at Rio’s carnival is the Samba parade; take your seat in the Sambadrome and watch the extravagant floats and costumed dancers go by. After which, you can soak up the atmosphere at one of the city’s street parties.
India
February is one of the best months to visit India. The weather is warm and dry across much of the country, but the sweltering heat of summer is still a couple of months away. You can expect temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius while touring the princely cities and desert forts of Rajasthan, and 27 degrees in the lush, green southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Winter snow remains in the Himalayan foothills of the far north – a picturesque backdrop for visiting Dharamshala, home to the Tibetan government-in-exile.
Central America
In the early months of the year, Central America experiences its dry season, affording visitors some of the best conditions for exploring. Set between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, this tropical region is compact enough to make a multi-country holiday the natural choice. You can plot a course from Panama right through to Guatemala, taking in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras on the way. Awaiting you alongside the warm welcome: volcanic vistas, Mayan ruins, golden beaches, and jungles bursting with life.
Patagonia
Wild and beautiful, Patagonia encompasses the southern-most tip of South America. Although it’s always worth packing for cool weather and strong winds, February is summertime in Patagonia, typified by longer, warmer and drier days. It’s the most popular time to explore this landscape of mountains, fjords, grasslands and glaciers. Visit the Argentinian side, the Chilean side, or combine the two on a multi-centre adventure.
