As we observe #WorldFoodDay 2024, Paul Behrens emphasises the importance of a Great Food Transformation to address the environmental impact of food systems. He outlines three key pillars: dietary changes, reducing food waste, and shifting to environmentally friendly production. In high-income countries, like the UK, a dietary shift could free up agricultural land to combat climate change and environmental damage, leading to cleaner air, healthier soils, and greater biodiversity. By embracing this transformation, we can build resilient, sustainable food systems. We've launched a new initiative called the Oxford Digital Public Infrastructure Research Lab (OxDPI) https://lnkd.in/e9HbgqQm OxDPI is a joint venture between the CSAE and the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford and co-directed by Stefan Dercon (BSG and Department of Economics, University of Oxford) and Christian Meyer (Oxford Martin School). Funded by Co-Develop. ℹ️ About: OxDPI will investigate the impacts of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) on inclusion and wellbeing in low- and middle-income countries. DPI refers to foundational digital systems like identification (similar to India’s Aadhaar system), payment platforms, and data exchange mechanisms crucial for service access and economic participation. This initiative aims to understand the impact of DPI on inclusion and the wellbeing of populations in countries where it is being deployed. This includes examining how DPI affects various sectors and societal outcomes, such as financial access, social protection, and refugee integration. On #WorldVeganDay, we’re spotlighting research from our Future of Food programme. Prof Peter Scarborough highlights a 2023 study that revealed vegan diets could dramatically reduce environmental impact. But even smaller changes, like reducing meat intake, can help lower our footprint significantly. Let’s explore how our food choices can create lasting change. 🌍🌱 Learn more about the Future of Food programme here: https://lnkd.in/eb9NZuSA University of Oxford Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences - University of Oxford

A PLOS Climate paper supported by our Biodiversity and Society programme explores how nature-based solutions can unlock prosperity by boosting local economies, increasing agricultural productivity and creating jobs. In their paper, the authors also highlight how NbS can create 'win-win' scenarios, such as raising income and creating jobs while enhancing biodiversity and supporting climate adaptation. These attributes make NbS an essential approach for countries as they transition to clean and efficient circular economies, says the review. "Language is like an entry step into people's cultures. Once you step in, you discover a whole different world that you didn't know existed." Incredibly powerful talk yesterday from Visiting Fellow Nwabisa Mlandu at the Oxford Martin School on factors affecting quality of life in adults with epilepsy: insights from South Africa. Particularly fascinating to learn about the challenges of communicating epilepsy when the vocabulary does not (yet) exist. Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights Nwabisa.
