Job alert combining the University of Oxford and the Caribbean 👩🎓🏝: we are hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate to study how innovative extraction of critical metals (mining volcanoes! 🌋) can be effectively governed, supporting both local communities and the broader net zero transition. Wicked? Read on. From the manufacture of batteries and electric vehicles, to the generation and transmission of renewable electricity, meeting the anticipated demand for critical metals in a secure and sustainable fashion is a challenge of global proportions. The world’s volcanoes emit as much copper, lithium, gold and many other so-called critical metals in their volcanic plumes as is mined every day around the world. Can we mine volcanoes for the critical metals we need to power the Net Zero energy transition? This is the challenge that our Oxford Martin School programme on "Rethinking Natural Resources" tackles through a case study of the Caribbean island of Montserrat. The successful applicant would work with a multidisciplinary team across the University (including at the Oxford Sustainable Law Programme, the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford, and the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford). Our team also works closely with the authorities on Montserrat, and the job would likely involve travelling there to work locally. The United Nations Secretary General launched a new Taskforce on Net Zero Policy, and I am thrilled to serve on its Technical Expert Group. With implementation of the Paris Agreement lagging ambition, net-zero regulations play a critical role to close the ‘implementation gap’ identified in the first global stocktake under the Paris Agreement. As we argued in Nature Climate Change earlier this year, we need to turn a groundswell of climate action into ground rules for net zero (https://lnkd.in/gUs5VBRf). Against this backdrop, the Taskforce has an important role to play. It aims to gather and produce insights which help align the credibility and accountability of 1.5°C-aligned net zero emissions commitments by non-state actors with effective coherent policies and regulatory certainty. We will produce a landmark report, to be published at COP29 and presented to the Secretary General, which will take stock of current trends and themes on net zero policy globally.
