Researchers from our Global Epilepsy programme are looking to address the global burden of epilepsy - especially in lower-income countries - by launching a dedicated Centre for Global Epilepsy at Wolfson College, Oxford, University of Oxford. The centre will collaborate with key research institutions and epilepsy clinics worldwide, linking expertise from high-income settings with those in less resourced environments to drive advancements in epilepsy research, diagnosis, treatment, and care. "Healthy aging is key to adapting to #demographic changes. One of the challenges of the combination of increasing life expectancy and declining fertility is the risk of many more elderly people becoming dependent on a declining workforce. Governments and firms need to explore how to allow people to work in different ways and to develop much more flexible #retirement and seniority structures to ensure demographic change is embraced as an opportunity rather than crippling families and economies.” says Professor Ian Goldin, Oxford University Professor of Globalization and Development and director of several research programs at the Oxford Martin School. In every country in the world, populations are getting older, but what does that mean for how we live? Climate change poses significant risks to financial stability, taking a toll on sovereign finances, especially in emerging and developing economies, which are often the most vulnerable to climate change and already face high levels of debt. This creates a 'climate investment trap': increased debt from climate disasters limits investments in adaptation and resilience, further raising future risks. A new discussion paper, authored by Mark Bernhofen, Matt Burke, Akaraseth Puranasamriddhi, Dr Nicola Ranger, and Gireesh Shrimali, explores how climate risks and adaptation can be integrated into sovereign credit ratings. By linking catastrophe modelling with a macroeconomic model and a credit rating model, the paper shows that failing to account for these risks leads to mispriced debt with implications for financial stability. Incorporating adaptation efforts into ratings could break this cycle, drive smarter investments, and improve financial resilience.

How can we broaden wildlife trade discussions so that they better represent the diversity of species that are traded? Our new Special Issue, Beyond Charismatic Megafauna in Illegal Wildlife Trade, has some suggestions and is out today in Conservation Biology! After more than a year of work to put this together with my fellow guest editors Dr Jared Margulies (University of Alabama Department of Geography and Dr. Alice C. Hughes (The University of Hong Kong) we ended up with 21 papers from more than 125 authors on a wide range of wildlife trade issues associated with a lot of different taxonomic groups. There are original research articles, reviews and perspective pieces looking at broad issues associated with multiple species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fungi and small mammals, as well as papers on more specific trade issues associated with cacti and succulents, carnivorous plants, crayfish, hornbills, parrots, sea snakes, snails, seahorses, totoaba, tarantulas, and turtles. The issue will be fully open access (most of it is already!) and can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e7uAzU-u Oxford Martin School Department of Biology, University of Oxford

The CSAE's Christian Meyer (Oxford Martin School) talks to Oluwatamilore Oni (Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford) on the Oxford Policy Podcast. https://lnkd.in/eei5nyfK Christian discusses the interactions between micro and macro economics and the confluence of international and domestic policymaking. He also underscores the necessity of humility when working on technology-enabled solutions and how understanding beneficiary behaviours and backgrounds is crucial to effective programming. 🎧https://lnkd.in/eei5nyfK
What are the connections between local and global policymaking? Why do we need to consider trauma when interacting with underserved communities? I had the privilege of hosting Dr Christian Meyer, Director of the Future of Development programme at the Oxford Martin School on the Policy Pod, where we discussed these questions and more at the intersections between economic development, technology, and impact programming. I’m here for a good analogy, and Christian gives some really interesting ones! Listen to find out how gardening and plumbing relate to economics. Okay, I’ve given enough sneak sound bites.
