May is 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, and we are celebrating the history of Asian Pacific Islanders within the YMCA movement. Did you know that the first Chinese American YMCA was founded in San Francisco in 1911? To this day, the Chinatown YMCA plays a pivotal role in the community. Slide through this post to learn more: 𝗗𝘂𝗸𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗸𝘂 was a gold medal Olympic swimmer who trained at the Central Y, setting world records for the 400 and 500 relay races in 1916. Following his Olympic career retirement, Kahanamoku traveled and conducted swimming exhibitions—it was during this time that he popularized the sport of surfing in the United States, which previously had only been known in Hawaii. Born in 1914, 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗵𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗮 worked for the YMCA full time for 39 years—from 1941 through 1980—except for his time in a government internment camp during WWII. While in this camp, Hoshiyama created YMCA-based programs to help address the social, educational and recreational needs of the Japanese Americans held in the camp. He was also instrumental in revitalizing the YMCA student movement in the 1970s, and a scholarship in his name provides professional development for Y staff of Asian Pacific Islander heritage to this day. #APAHeritageMonth

In 1988, Jamaica became the first tropical country to compete in the Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They sent a two-man and four-man team for the bobsleigh event. Bermuda, Malaysia and the Philippines also sent athletes to compete in skiing and slalom events at the Winter Olympics. South Korea and America are starting to play sepak takraw, a sport that has its roots in Malaysia. There's so much I can infer from these unlikely sporting endeavours. 1. Sports can unite the world. 2. Create acceptable uses of "appropriation". 3. If this can happen in sport, couldn't cross-cultural baby adoptions (across races, castes and religions) do the same for unity and peace on earth?

[Implications of longer lives] We are seeing populations live longer and it has implications for businesses, the economy, pensions, society and for us as individuals. You can check the "Longevity Dividend" presentation I delivered on this topic to the US. Federal Foresight Community of Interest (link in comments) This topic of longer lives continues to fascinate me and I started an interview series to capture people's healthy aging protocols. In essence it's capturing people's way of living life. You can find out more at Project Nof1 🤸 #longevity #healthspan #lifespan
She started swimming at age 66. 33 years later, she’s won hundreds of medals and broken three world records in her age group. “The pool is my happy place,” says 99-year-old Betty Brussel. One of 12 children, she grew up in the Netherlands and wasn’t able to pursue any extracurricular activities until she retired in 1982. She began swimming and entered her first competition in 1991. As for her longevity, she credits maintaining an active lifestyle, being a happy person, and simply “doing stuff.” So there you have it: You’re not too old, and it’s not too late.

Do what u love, love what u do! I was in the #executivesearch & #recruitment business for 20+ years, loved it, it took me from Sydney to Singapore to Tokyo and back to Singapore. It was very kind to me and my family, financially & opportunities for personal and career growth. Started as an "apprentice" recruiter to Regional Director Asia for a US based recruitment firm. My wife used to say "u are so weird, get up early & excited to go to the office, most people hate their job". I knew I had to call time on my corporate career when I didnt get that buzz anymore. It was a massive risk. Well meaning family & friends chipped in with "u crazy? u have a good job, good salary, why quit?". If u know me, I am all in or nothing. I can't be half in. That would be unfair to my employer and my ambition. So, grabbed both my nuts & jumped without a parachute. Now, I have my 2nd wind in my sails. Re-invented into a technopreneur. Started www.zag.network with a great team with similar #vibes & #ambition. Working on a few other "stealth" mode projects. Now my wife says "u are so weird. u sleep 4-5 hours a day, mondays to sundays". My reply "the buzz is back, baby, buzz is BACK!" I share info on #AI & #Web3, if that is of interest, connect with me on Linkedin or ZAG Network, a social network I co-founded. Sign up a GOLD STAR account on app.zag.network, www.zag.network. Retirement Wisdom. Here’s a perspective from former Olympian swimmer Joscelin Yeo who represented Singapore - post her retirement from competitive swimming - that is worth sharing. “In transition, there’s also translation. I had to learn to translate the life lessons sport had given me into a new context because I needed them to be successful again. I did not look at transition as a new identity I had to build, instead, I looked at transition as a chance to build upon my identity as an athlete, to build a bigger network of support, and to once again, challenge myself to accomplish what I never thought possible.” CNA #leaders #retirement #newlife #accomplishments #womenleaders #singapore #family #transition #translation

The wonderment of the development of young international students outside the classroom. What an industry I get to work in.
Last year, Nimish Ukey, an international PhD candidate at UNSW, completed the Learn to Swim program - which if you don't know, teaches students with little to no swimming ability to have basic swimming skills in eight weeks. I want to share Nimish's story. Why? Firstly - I think it's incredible that with determination and participation through the program, he went from being afraid of open water to becoming a swim instructor at UNSW and mentoring other international students through their journey! And secondly, how great is it that we can offer a program like this as well as Beach Ocean Safe, so not only are students keeping themselves safe when out in the water, but that they can enjoy the water culture that Sydney and Australia has to offer? You can read more of Nimish's story here: https://lnkd.in/gQJx5PUJ Madhav Raman Oliver Jackson Coogee Surf Life Saving Club Surf Life Saving NSW UNSW Education & Student Experience Medibank -- UNSW's Health and Wellbeing Ambassador Program covers a range of activities, campaigns and programs for students, domestic and international to support and build their health and wellbeing.

Having the Olympics on in our JLL Hong Kong office is fantastic! I’m constantly finding excuses to head up to our cafe area to take in the action. It’s especially exciting as well to see Hong Kong flying high on the medal table, with one of the highest medals per capita ratios in the games. But it should come as no surprise as I find it hard to think of anywhere else in the world better equipped for world class sport. Prior to 2008, the UK only had two Olympic sized swimming pools… Hong Kong has 44 which are open to the public. Hong Kong has 25 government run athletics stadiums with running tracks, spectator stands and space for field activities. Sha Tin rowing centre provides top drawer facilities for rowing and other paddle sports, whilst Hong Kong Sports Institute provides athletes with an elite training centre and scientific support. Whilst generous funding is offered to our athletes to enable them to focus on achieving their ambitions. This is without even mentioning the new Kai Tak Sports Park with its new 50,000 seater stadium, or the world class mountains, beaches and oceans which provide the perfect playground for trail runners, sailing, canoeing, cycling and climbing. There is truly no other place in Asia able to offer both elite athletes and casual weekend warriors such a fantastic range of features. It’s been a running joke that every fencing school in Hong Kong will have been inundated by calls from parents who want their kids to take up the sport, but this is exactly what an Olympic Games should do! We want to see young Hong Kongers inspired by our current stars; imagining limitless possibilities in their own future and taking the first steps to achieving those dreams. Hong Kong is not just Asia’s Financial Capital, but also a sport and cultural hub, which is why it continues and always will be Asia’s World City.

Please join the Nu Beta Sigma Alumnae chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated and the Swim Strong Foundation our Annual Swim 1922 Water Safety Clinic on Saturday, May 18th, 2024. We will have a wet clinic for participants ages 8 to adults on the importance of water safety skills. We will provide CPR training that will lead to receiving a certification. We will also give a way summer swim lesson scholarships. SWIM 1922, in partnership with USA Swimming, is one of SGRho’s national programs and is targeted at reducing the drowning rates of African American and Hispanic children. One way our sorority and chapter have leaned in to support this effort is by hosting swim clinics to teach youth about water safety. In turn, it is our hope that this engagement and exposure will reduce the number of African American and Hispanic youth’s fear of water and increase their knowledge and participation in swimming. Did you know? According to the CDC, approximately 10 people drown every day in the U.S.A. An even more startling fact is that 70 percent of African American children and 60 percent of Hispanic children in the U.S. do not know how to swim. https://lnkd.in/gEVtaKRr
