Generational beliefs, fears, and myths, combined with inequitable access to water resources and basic swim instruction, has left nearly 60% of Black and Brown children are unable to swim or uncomfortable in the deep end of the pool. Without the essential life skill of swimming, these children are 8 times greater risk of drowning. AquaMissions is determined to dispel the commonplace myths, fears and stereotypes about the dangers and inaccessibility of water and swimming and equip Black and LatinX children in Cleveland with access to life-saving water safety and swimming instruction. Following is a Policy Statement on the century-long problem of inequitable access to water resources and swim instruction for minorities, and recommendations to change the trajectory of water-related accidents and deaths among Black and Brown children in Cleveland.

Many communities still believe swimming is for certain people based on socio-economic background, race, or culture. To change this narrative, it's vital to: 1. Promote Water Confidence as a Life Skill: Swimming is a basic survival skill, not just a sport. Everyone deserves access to learn it, regardless of background. 2. Representation Matters: Ensure that instructors and role models from diverse backgrounds are visible in water sports. This helps dispel the myth that swimming is only for certain groups. 3. Create Accessible Programs: Developing low-cost swimming and water confidence workshops for underrepresented groups, to ensure cost isn't a barrier. 4. Cultural Awareness: Acknowledge and address the historical and cultural factors that may have contributed to certain groups being underrepresented in water activities, providing context and understanding to the challenges they face. 5. Positive Media and Education: We share our success stories and educational content that breaks down the false beliefs around who can swim, highlighting individuals from all walks of life succeeding in water sports. Summer is here, and it's time to revisit water safety tips! At Friends of the Children - Houston, we know that children of color face a higher risk of drowning. Did you know 64% of Black and Indigenous kids do not know how to swim? This highlights the need for water safety education. Swimming lessons can reduce drowning risk by 88% for kids aged 1-4. However, access has been limited for many families of color. Check out your local YMCA that offers water safety and swimming lessons for youth and families in our community. Stay safe this summer! Remember: Always supervise children near water. Teach basic swimming skills. Use life jackets for young/inexperienced swimmers. Avoid alcohol when swimming/supervising swimmers. Swimming How many black adults and children that can swim ? I probably gues not that many.. Let me tell you why ….. So prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, 95% of Black adults and 80% of Black children did not participate in swimming activities regularly, compared to 89% of White British adults and 71% of White British children. The truth is stark: a prevailing stigma suggests that swimming is a skill beyond the reach of the Black community. But this is more than a mere oversight; it’s a dangerous neglect of a life-saving skill. Let’s break the cycle of this disparity. So how can we improve this …? Let’s shatter the stigma. Join me in promoting swimming lessons in our communities. It’s not just about fun – it’s about empowering us all and it is also important for community to access to vital water safety and drowning prevention education. 🌊🏊♂️ Did you know water safety is a top priority at YMCA Camp Combe? One key component of our water safety program is teaching swim lessons to campers ages 4 to rising 2nd grade as part of their camp day. Safety and fun go hand in hand at Camp Combe! Check out this short video showing our campers doing warm-up kicks, blowing bubbles, and swimming across the pool. 🌟 The end slide features our important buddy check process. Children repeat our pool rules before entering the pool area and are assigned a buddy. Once in the pool, we perform buddy checks every 15 minutes. Here's how it works: a lifeguard blows their whistle, the children exit the pool and find their buddy, then hold hands until all buddies are counted.
