Exciting news for whales! The U.S. Coast Guard's Seattle base is taking an innovative step to protect whales and improve marine safety by integrating whale tracking into their operations, thanks to funding from the FY2022 bill. The Coast Guard has established a new "cetacean desk" at Sector Puget Sound's Vessel Traffic System operations centre that will collect and distribute real-time reports of whale movements. This data will help ships avoid collisions with these magnificent creatures, benefiting marine traffic and whale conservation efforts. Lt. Cmdr. Margaret Woodbridge, the program manager, highlights the significance of this data in informing ships about whale presence, which will improve maritime safety and scientific research on whales in the region. This initiative is a significant victory for the Quiet Sound program led by Washington Maritime Blue, which aims to reduce ship impacts on the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. Stakeholders actively seek coexistence between ships and marine life in the Salish Sea by promoting vessel noise reduction and implementing voluntary slowdown initiatives during critical migration periods.
