"Confirmation - Full Proposal Received # 85072" Somehow in between two tradeshows and a partner visit in 3 countries over the last two weeks, I managed to put the finishing touches on FarSounder's proposal to National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's `Vessel Strike Avoidance Fund 2024`. Big thanks to my colleague Heath Henley for working on this with me from our appartment in Cannes during #CYF last week. Our proposal addresses an important topic: helping to protect the dwindling population of the North Atlantic Right Whale. I see #3DForwardLookingSonar as playing a critical role in helping to mitigate this issue. Our customers can use our products to detect #whales ahead of their vessels in real-time. However, our technology isn't just a value for our Argos sonar customers. Whale observations from our user's systems will soon be shared anonymously with our cloud services which will then forward these observations to the organziations who work to track populations, analyze data, process statistical models, and then disseminate information back to the overall maritime community. (We're already applying this same model to crowdsourcing depth observations and enabling our customer to contribute to Seabed 2030) This comprehensive, industry wide solution will require the cooperation and coordination across a wide swath of technologies, companies, scientists, and governmental organizations. That's why we're working with the likes of the National Marine Electronics Association, the WAVS Taskforce, and others to help make this a reality. Flying fish do not have a special adaptation to breathe outside of water. During the time they spend in the air, they rely on the oxygen they have taken in while underwater. Flying fish belong to the family Exocoetidae and are typically found in tropical and subtropical seas. These fish can leap out of the water and glide over short distances by using their fins. This ability helps them escape predators or search for food. Fins: The pectoral (chest) fins of flying fish are very large and function like wings. In some species, the pelvic (abdominal) fins also expand, acting as a second pair of wings. #Fish #Flying #Science #Sea

Innovative camera system provides a closer look at elusive ocean predators - MBARI: Marine predators such as tunas, sharks, seabirds, and marine mammals play a pivotal role in structuring ocean ecosystems. Despite their importance, these animals remain challenging to study. They spend much of their time far from shore and dispersed across remote stretches of the global ocean. 🚨 The Norwegian krill fishing giant, Aker BioMarine, deployed a 6-meter Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) under the guise of "research and population mapping" in #Antarctica. In reality, equipped with advanced sensors and radar, the USV was made to precisely pinpoint #krill concentrations, enabling fishing vessels to exploit krill populations more efficiently than ever before. 😰 Despite Aker BioMarine's claims of reducing CO2 emissions, it's clear: this is greenwashing at its worst!⚠️ Our crew is out at sea to document this LEGAL exploitation, demanding a zero krill-catch quota and the establishment of more marine protected areas around the continent. We have already influenced CCAMLRS’ decision not to increase this year’s krill quota. But together, we can push to end this forever! 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 | We undertake environmental surveying at our fish farms, which are in areas of high biodiversity, to ensure we operate in harmony with the important species and habitats nearby. Recent underwater drone footage collected by our Environmental Field Scientist, Alistair Docherty shows the healthy and diverse marine environment that exists below and around our Hellisay fish farm, in the Sound of Barra. #SwimmingFeatherStars #MegaRipples-MaerlBed ℹ️ Feather Stars look like plants, but they are graceful marine animals that use their arms to catch and filter food particles. ( drone video attachment) ℹ️ Maerl is a purple-pink hard seaweed that forms spiky underwater carpets on the seabed with maerl beds being classed as priority marine features in Scotland’s seas. Maerl bed coverage under our Hellisay fish farm occurs in coarse sandy sediment, often in the troughs of mega ripples caused by the sculpting of the seabed by wave action.

Case Study: Maritime 🐟 ⛴ 10 to 23.5 billion USD are lost annually from illegal fishing. Big losses from big illegal fishing activity. Current optical technology is greatly limited by visibility. At nighttime ships disappear, and illegal vessels can be hidden by clouds or mistaken for waves. ☁️ 🌊   With our infrared telescopes, owing to the sea’s nearly homogenous temperature, vessels can be easily spotted, hence alleviating the challenges of optical imaging technology.
