About us

Save The Bay is the largest regional organization working to protect and restore San Francisco Bay for people and wildlife. We are the voice of the Bay and for almost 60 years, Save The Bay has inspired people to advocate for a clean and healthy Bay. In this era of climate change and a growing population, we work with scientists and policymakers to protect the Bay as our region's most important natural resource--essential to our environment, economy, and quality of life.

Meet Gwendolyn, our Chief Advancement Officer. She's been with Save The Bay for 7 years, supporting the work through development and communications 🐕🏞️💚 Favorite CA Native plant: Hummingbird sage What inspired you to work in the environmental field? The beauty of the outdoors has always inspired me, and now that my son shares this love, I'm even more determined to protect these spaces. It's difficult to witness these landscapes change, disappear, and be impacted by climate change. Dedicating my career to nonprofit work focused on protecting these places is one way I can contribute to preserving the natural world I hold so dear. What do you love most about what you do? I used to work in the corporate arena and while I had some amazing clients and experiences, I didn't feel fulfilled. Working for a nonprofit speaks to me because it's mission-driven and the time and energy goes into making a difference. I also love the people here at Save The Bay, especially my amazing team. When you're not in the "office", someone find you: In the high Sierras, often chasing waterfalls. Listening to: Stuff you Should Know, Climate One, Nonprofits are Messy, and Medical Medium podcasts My niche hobby is: A little over a year ago, my answer to this question would have been vastly different. As a newly disabled person, finding new hobbies has been challenging. I'd say, ask me this question again next year!

UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlights the urgent need for action as rising sea levels threaten global communities. Rising seas aren't just a distant threat — they’re impacting our shores now, increasing flooding and endangering coastal habitats. To protect our communities and restore vital shorelines, we are pushing cities and the state to prioritize nature-based flood protection and sustainable climate adaptation solutions 🌍💡 For a deeper dive into the challenges and proposed solutions, read the full article here:

Next staff member to spotlight is Charlie! If you've been to an education or corporate program in the past few years, you might've met Charlie working first on the Habitat Restoration Team and now on the Development Team 🐸🌲🤩 Favorite CA Native: Sequoia sempervirens, Coast Redwood What inspired you to work in the environmental field? My mom and my maternal grandparents. My mom would teach me the names of plants and which one's I could eat, my grandma would throw bird seed all over her porch and identify the birds that "came to visit" and every time we visited my grandpa's house we would walk to the creek and catch frogs and explore. What do you love most about what you do? I get to learn about all the aspects of our work at Save The Bay and then I share my excitement for that work with people and get them excited. I'm a hype man for Bay restoration and advocacy. We work for a better present and future for our community, that's the best. When you're not in the "office", someone find you: Walking with my family in the East Bay hills and ending at a brewery or somewhere I can eat french fries Currently listening to: The Run-up, The Ezra Klein Show, and Jazz House. Currently reading: The Wheel of Time, on book 4 of 14 - wish me luck. My niche interest/hobby is: Magic cards (red/green beast decks are my fave), collecting tchotchkes, and making magnets out of anything #StaffSpotlight #SaveTheBay #HabitatRestoration #EnvironmentalEducation #Development #NonProfit

Meet Amy, our Associate Director of Institutional Philanthropy! Amy supports Save The Bay's mission and programs through grants and corporate sponsorships so we have the resources and connections to protect and restore San Francisco Bay 💡🖼️🦋 Favorite CA Native plant: Valley Oak— and of course, golden poppy! What inspired you to work in the environmental field? I first got involved in activism around food systems, around 20 years ago when a lot was changing with GMOs and pesticide use. I ended up focusing on those issues in my studies at UC Santa Cruz, and getting hardcore involved in the newly formed Student Environmental Center. What do you love most about what you do? I love learning from Save The Bay's program teams about the details of their projects, and communicating them to donors through writing and storytelling. When you're not in the "office", someone find you: Attending theater or dance performances, listening to audiobooks, thrift store shopping Currently listening to and reading: Toumani Diabate, a brilliant kora player from Mali who sadly recently passed away, and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt Niche hobby: Discovering "hidden staircases" on my runs in Oakland hilly neighborhoods, making collage- decorated plates/boxes for gifts #MeetTheTeam #SaveTheBay #Philanthropy #Fundraising #Nonprofit

Earlier this August, the Habitat Restoration Team (HRT) headed out to Coyote Hills in Fremont for some impactful seed collection. With collection permits in hand, HRT gathered native plant seeds to grow in our Palo Alto nursery, where they’ll be tended for use in various project sites across the Bay Area. By focusing on native plants, we’re ensuring that restoration efforts use species that are resilient and well-adapted to their environment. While most collection happens in the summer, some plants, like California Poppy and Bulrush, are prime for gathering now. After collecting, the seeds are brought back to the Palo Alto nursery for cleaning and processing—something HRT and amazing volunteers love doing during nursery programs.

California is on the brink of a major step forward in reducing single-use plastic waste with AB 2236 and SB 1053. These bills aim to ban plastic bags at checkout in grocery and some retail stores, targeting one of the most common and harmful pollutants in our waterways. In 2014, Save The Bay helped pass California’s original plastic bag ban, but the plastic industry maneuvered around it. Now, we have a chance to close those loopholes and truly protect our environment. Let’s urge Governor Newsom and state policymakers to ban plastic bags and keep our communities cleaner! Sign the petition here: https://buff.ly/3X99i0r #AB2236 #SB1053 #BanTheBag #BreakFreeFromPlastic #CALeg
