Preserving and managing a regional greenbelt of 65,000 acres of public open space in the Santa Cruz Mountain region

About us

Founded in 1972 by voter initiative, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District preserves and manages a regional greenbelt system in the San Francisco Bay Area, that includes parts of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and a small portion of Santa Cruz county. It is one of California’s largest urban regional open space districts with nearly 65,000 acres, 26 preserves and more than 225 miles of trails. Midpen protects over 70 rare native species and critical habitats like waterways and redwood forests. Over 2 million visits are made annually to its regional preserves. Of Midpen's 26 preserves, 24 are open to the public free of charge, 365 days a year from dawn until one-half hour after sunset. Midpen's mission is to acquire and preserve a regional greenbelt of open space and agricultural land of regional significance in perpetuity, protect and restore the natural environment and provide opportunities for ecologically-sensitive public enjoyment and education. ------------------------------------------- Midpen is a single-purpose, independent special district. This site is intended as a limited public forum for information sharing between Midpen and the public. Comments posted to this page will be monitored during regular business hours. • It’s been a very successful year for purple martins nesting and hatching chicks in Midpen preserves! Thanks to habitat enhancement work, 13 birds of this locally rare population hatched and successfully fledged, increasing their chances of survival into adulthood. This spring, staff swapped some existing nest boxes in the area with the hollowed-out pole segments that mimic natural habitat. One issue this species deals with (that bay area residents may know something about) is housing competition. Due to loss of natural habitats, western purple martins engaged in fierce, and sometimes deadly competition with other nesting birds to utilize these cavities. Midpen biologists monitor these inter-species interactions to better understand and manage the site. Researchers also outfitted several birds with colored identification bands to help differentiate individuals. While western purple martins have shown signs of site fidelity (the tendency to return to the same areas after migrating thousands of miles), the bands will help researchers conclude if the same individuals return year after year. In the photos and videos above, listen to the robotic warbling of the western purple martin, check out footage from different nest cameras at various stages of the chick’s life, watch an expert biologist with San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory outfit a bird with the plastic identification bands and see our lead biologist, Karine Tokatlian inspecting one of the cavities.
