We prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies.

About us

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Each day, thousands of people – people just like you – provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world. We roll up our sleeves and donate time, money and blood. We learn or teach life-saving skills so our communities can be better prepared when the need arises. We do this every day because the Red Cross is needed - every day.

Every Red Crosser has a story, and Jen Allen is no different. ❤️ She is one of the hundreds of Red Cross disaster responders in Louisiana supporting recovery efforts after Hurricane Francine made landfall earlier this week. Her role is to help locate impacted communities, assess the damage, and inform our disaster relief operation where help is needed. Jen recently visited Houma, a city in Terrebonne Parish that was directly hit by Francine. While there, she witnessed the power of community and how our Community Adaptation Program partners are supporting people affected. “In Houma, the entire city was without power,” she said. “It was especially concerning given it was 90 degrees outside. Many people were sitting on their porches trying to cool off and take advantage of any sort of breeze. One of our Community Adaptation Program (CAP) liaisons alerted us of a feeding site that was opening up by one of our hyper-local partners. These partnerships are built on the concept of ‘neighbors helping neighbors,' and the Red Cross is there to help empower communities to become more resilient and locally respond when disasters strike. When we arrived at the food and relief supply distribution site, my colleague Sam and I were welcomed with open arms and thanked for helping by our Terrebonne Parish partners such as the CAN-U Tri-Parish (Community Action Network), AmeriHealth, and the local Rotary Club. In talking with the volunteers, we learned that most of them were without power and had been up through the night from the storm. One volunteer named Kimberly from the CAN-U Tri-Parish said, ‘I have no reason to be in the house right now without power; why not do something good with my time?’ In just a couple of hours, the feeding site distributed hundreds of meals, snacks, water, and clean-up kits. A shelter location was also in the process of opening while we were there. The most amazing part of the day was the smiles and kindness I witnessed from the volunteers who helped and the people we served. Even though many had lost everything, they still smiled and asked me how I was doing. I know the road to recovery for these communities will be long, but the Red Cross and our partners are prepared to support them every step of the way.” Thank you, Jen, for sharing your experience and giving us a glimpse into how our local partnerships with community organizations are helping families recover from climate-driven disasters one day at a time. #HurricaneFrancine #CommunityPartnerships #ClimateCrisis

More than 100,000 people across the U.S. live with sickle cell disease, which distorts red blood cells and makes it difficult for them to flow through the bloodstream and carry oxygen to the body. Blood transfusions increase the number of healthy red blood cells and can reduce life-threatening complications like severe pain, tissue and organ damage, anemia, and even strokes. #TeamUp4SickleCell

We’re thrilled to announce that our Chief Sustainability Officer, Noel Anderson, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Sustainability LIVE event in London! 🎉 This award celebrates our dedication as an organization to a greener, more sustainable future. Noel could not have received this achievement without the incredible commitment and diligent work of Red Cross teams and partners across the country. Here’s what he had to say about it during his live fireside chat: “I’m very excited for this award because of what it represents. A lot of work has been put in by many people in this Red Cross family. "In the last four years, we’ve made huge inroads by engaging our staff, volunteers, donors, and partners to address the climate crisis in a more impactful way. It’s great to see the entire sustainability community helping us along this journey. It’s truly been a collective win that has been great to see and be a part of.” Join us in congratulating Noel and our sustainability team for this exciting achievement! From coast to coast, Red Cross disaster teams are on the move! 📍In Gulf Coast states, volunteers are mobilizing teams and preparing supplies for the arrival of Hurricane Francine. The storm is expected to strengthen before it makes landfall in Louisiana. 📍 Out West, massive wildfires fueled by extreme temperatures continue to burn, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes. Local disaster teams are caring for people in shelters and encouraging everyone to heed evacuation orders and prepare for prolonged power outages. How can you help? The best way to support our disaster relief efforts is to donate, which enables us to be on the ground for these raging wildfires, Francine, and other extreme weather events happening across the country now and in the future. Whatever you give today will help people affected by disasters big and small: https://rdcrss.org/3AX4Edj

No matter how many years they've spent serving our lifesaving mission, these blood collections team members make a vital contribution to the care of hospital patients in need of blood transfusions. This Blood Collectors Week, we're celebrating them and all they do. • Nearly 6,000 blood and platelet collections team members work at Red Cross blood drives and donation centers. • They make it possible for us to support patients at about 2,500 hospitals across the country. • On average, they collect more than 4.5 million blood donations and nearly 1 million platelet donations each year. Do you have a favorite team member you always enjoy seeing when you come in to donate blood? Help us celebrate them by giving them a shout out in the comments! #BloodCollectorsWeek American Red Cross of Indiana American Red Cross Los Angeles Region American Red Cross of Illinois American Red Cross Northwest Region

At just 16 years old, Hudson Mobley saved a man's life. He was able to act quickly during an emergency thanks to the training he received as a lifeguard. While working at a country club in Kenner, Louisiana, last year, Hudson came across a large gathering of people and sensed something was wrong. Someone had collapsed on the ground and was in cardiac arrest. Hudson knew exactly what to do. He ask someone to call 911 and retrieve an AED while he immediately started CPR. EMTs arrived moments later and took the man to the hospital. It was thanks to Hudson's quick action that he survived. "I remember I sat on the curb and started crying," Hudson said. "A police officer came up to me and said, 'Hey, are you alright? You did great out there.'" Hudson's classmates surprised him at a school pep rally to recognize his heroism. The American Red Cross of Louisiana was there to present him with the Certificate of Merit, the most prestigious Red Cross Lifesaving Award. Hudson hopes that his story will inspire others to learn lifesaving skills. We're so proud of him! 🫶🏼 #LifesavingAward #LifesavingSkills #CPR #AED
