Clinicians: New CDC MMWR finds that fewer than half of older adult patients received outpatient COVID-19 antiviral treatment. While risk of hospitalization and death increases with age, particularly for those aged 65 years and older, these data suggest that lifesaving COVID-19 treatment was underused and that use of treatment declined with increasing age. As a clinician, you are best positioned to support your patients and their caregivers to make informed choices to help prevent severe COVID-19. Consider COVID-19 treatment in patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 who have one or more risk factors for severe COVID-19. Patient assistance programs are available to people who are underinsured, uninsured, and who are on Medicare or Medicaid to lower or even eliminate their out-of-pocket costs.
