Overview

Evergreen Group started its business operation with Evergreen Marine Corporation (EMC), which was established by Group Chairman, Dr. Yung-Fa Chang on 1 September 1968. From this humble beginning when EMC operated with just a 15-year-old general cargo ship, the company has achieved many remarkable successes throughout its history in the shipping industry. This success has been rooted in the business philosophy of "creating profits, caring for employees, and giving back to the society".

Nowadays, Evergreen operates an efficient fleet of more than 200 full-containerships and has developed a service network across five continents. In terms of the scale of fleet capacity, cargo volumes, and innovative shipbuilding concepts, Evergreen ranks among the world's leading international shipping companies.

EMC has achieved many significant records in the history of container shipping. In 1975, when the energy crisis hit the world economy and the shipping market suffered a sharp downturn, EMC nevertheless recognized an opportunity and, predicting a subsequent growth trend, launched its containerization project. With a newly built fleet of fast full-container ships, EMC began a container liner services connecting the Far East and the East Coast of the United States, becoming the first shipping company in Taiwan to operate such a service and fleet. In 1984, EMC successfully inaugurated unprecedented eastbound and westbound two-way round-the-world liner services. The huge success of the innovative enterprise enabled the company to become the largest container carrier in the world by 1985.

In order to cultivate maritime talent, vital to its development, EMC built the Evergreen Seafarer Training Center in 1999. This was the first professional marine training facility in Taiwan to be awarded ISO-9001:2000 certification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). The training programs remain, not only in line with the standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) but are also recognized by professional maritime agencies such as Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Marine Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK).

In addition to providing training programs for crew of vessels within the Evergreen Group, the facility also undertakes relevant training required by third-party organizations. With professional equipment and stringent standards, it strives to improve the professional skills of crew and helps to safeguard navigational safety.

In 2007, with the introduction of the brand 'Evergreen Line', the services operated by EMC as well as Italia Marittima S.p.A., Evergreen Marine (UK) Ltd. and Evergreen Marine (Hong Kong) Ltd. came together to trade under that name. Those of Evergreen Marine (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Evergreen Marine (Asia) Pte. Ltd. were integrated subsequently. Under the single brand name, all the shipping companies of Evergreen Group worked seamlessly to build an efficient global network. Furthermore, through shipping alliance, joint services or space sharing, Evergreen Line actively conducts strategic cooperation with other container carriers to provide comprehensive transportation services and enhance its operational performance.

Evergreen Line has adopted digital technologies to deliver the highest standards of customer service. It uses the well-established ShipmentLink portal to introduce the i-B/L (intelligent Bill of Lading), i-Dispatch, a digital solution to dispatch documentation, and the GreenX e-commerce platform. In addition to enhancing service efficiency, these intelligent services also enable the implementation of paperless operations, help improve the operational efficiency of the supply chain, and contribute to building a carbon net-zero shipping ecosystem.

In order to provide customers with consistent and efficient services, Evergreen Line has set up regional transshipment centers at hub ports in Asia, America and Europe, and built dedicated container terminals in Kaohsiung and Taipei Port in Taiwan, and Colon Container Terminal in Panama to enhance operational efficiency and service quality.

Evergreen Line embraces the core values of sustainable operation and is firmly committed to its responsibility as a "Guardian of the Green Earth". The company fully complies with international environmental protection regulations and takes active measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including introducing new eco-friendly ships for fleet renewal and contributing to various international environmental protection initiatives. All Evergreen Line's newly built vessels are eco-friendly designed in line with the requirements of MARPOL's SOx and NOx emission regulations, and superior to the standards of EEDI carbon emission index. They are equipped with ballast water treatment systems, energy saving devices and other environmentally friendly technology.

Since its establishment, Evergreen Line has always been committed to environmental protection, expanding efforts in social care, and improving corporate governance. It will continue to enhance overall operational competitiveness through short, medium and long-term strategies to fulfill the responsibilities of corporate sustainability.
