Someone else said: 'Deadpool and Wolverine was a blast! The chemistry between Hugh and Ryan is dynamite! Exquisite action sequences, undeniable comedy and cameos that enhanced the story! I can't wait to watch it again!'.

And: 'It's not often that one sees a film at the cinema and wants to go straight back in and watch it again'.

'Deadpool and Wolverine is THE superhero nostalgia fest you've been waiting for. If you've been suffering from "superhero fatigue" this will be a f****** shock to your system that will have you laughing creaming and crying 10/10 no notes'.

Another commented: 'Deadpool and Wolverine Film. Of. The. Year. Utterly speechless - the hype paid of beautifully. Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman seamlessly revive that nostalgic adrenaline-packed MCU energy we grew to love with extreme precision. My soul is fulfilled'.

Marvel's The Marvels was a box office bomb last year losing a reported £200M in 2023, prompting some to argue the studio is suffering from audience 'superhero fatigue' with too many films a year.

Featuring a trio of female leads, Iman Vellani, Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris, it was rubbished by critics as 'interminable' and has earned less money than any of the 32 Marvel movies that preceded it.

Marvel and Disney CEO Bob Iger warned the superhero studio had spread itself too thin with offshoots including the Disney + series.

'Not only did they increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of TV series,' he told CNBC.

But when it comes to the critics, opinions on the mobie have been sharply split, with some praising the chemistry of the two leads and humour, while others have branded it 'just awful'.

The film follows loudmouth Deadpool recruiting a Wolverine from a different timeline to form an unlikely team, in order to defeat a common enemy.

Early reviews have teased that viewers can expect plenty more outrageous jokes and meta commentary, with A-list cameos and bloody action in store.

Empire's Olly Richards gave the flick four stars and revealed it 'goes hard on the in-jokes and wish-fulfilment', while saying the core is 'an extremely affable buddy movie, played to near-perfection by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.'

He wrote: 'From cameos to background Easter eggs to long-fan-ficked meet-ups, it’s a relentless onslaught of surprises designed to get audiences screaming and throwing popcorn in the air.'

While in another four star review from Vicky Jessop in The Standard, she wrote: 'For nerds Deadpool & Wolverine feels like the comic book equivalent of the Superbowl: massive, glitzy, crammed to bursting with stars, blood-pumping action and featuring an excellent soundtrack.'

Ian Sandwell gave the movie four stars too in his review for Digital Spy, saying it was 'terrific entertainment, two hours of fan service wrapped up as a summer blockbuster.'

He said the leads had 'strong chemistry', and while admitting the movie may not hold up years to come, as it has 'not much going on under the surface', he went ont to say: 'It's pure fan service, so knock off a star if you were after more, but Deadpool & Wolverine knows it's fan service – and it doesn't f**king care.'

IGN's Tom Jorgensen also admitted the film is not without its flaws, but called it 'an outrageous, consistently funny superhero comedy that succeeds largely thanks to the contagious enthusiasm of leads Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and a surprisingly classy perspective on superhero movie history.'

Richard Lawson also praised Ryan and Hugh in Vanity Fair, saying they 'are a dream together, both immensely comfortable in their respective characters and apparently willing to do just about anything to give the audience a laugh.'

But he added that their action sequences leave a lot to be desired, despite being both 'bloody and profane' writing: 'The sparring between the silly goose and the tough grump that has been a centerpiece of the film’s marketing never quite sparks; their fight scenes are equally underwhelming, repetitive and terribly hampered by both characters’ invincibility.'

The BBC's Caryn James agreed in her three star review, saying: 'The fights are about as sophisticated as watching kids in a playground, and they rely heavily on slow motion, as if that will instantly create tension.'

She added: 'Despite a stellar media campaign, the odd-couple buddy team of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is occasionally wry and entertaining, but the action is "a slog".'

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw also only gave the film three stars, saying 'there are a lot of laughs here as this film crashes along with plenty of juke-box slams to keep blood-sugar content high'.

But he added that the constant meta gags at the expense of Marvel and Disney's decision to purchase Fox and the X-Men with it, could be both 'amusing and exhausting.'

Bilge Ebiri had the same opinion, writing in Vulture: 'At times, it feels like Deadpool has only two flavors of humor: knowing digs at the industry that spawned him and sex jokes.

'These are funny the first few times, but after a while you wonder if maybe he should attempt some new material.'

The Independent's Clarisse Loughrey was even more brutal in her assessment, writing: 'Deadpool & Wolverine is as much fun as you can conceivably have at a corporate merger meeting.

'It’s tedious, yet, occasionally, Ryan Reynolds’s fourth wall-allergic “Merc with a Mouth” will pass a note around the table with a penis drawn on it, and everyone can have a quiet, little chuckle to themselves.

Deadpool & Wolverine - what do the critics say?

Digital Spy

Rating:

'Deadpool & Wolverine is terrific entertainment, two hours of fan service wrapped up as a summer blockbuster. It's not perfect and might not stand up to repeat viewings, but you won't care in the moment.'

'Whether the movie can stand the test of time remains to be seen, with not much going on under the surface. It's pure fan service, so knock off a star if you were after more, but Deadpool & Wolverine knows it's fan service – and it doesn't f**king care.'

The Irish Times

Rating:

'The creators of Deadpool will argue, lamely in my view, that by admitting the puerile nature of the humour they inure themselves to criticism in that area, but no such excuses are offered for the onanistic self-regard.

'After two hours of this infantile mugging, one is left longing for the genuinely upending humour of the Batman TV series from 60 years ago. Awful. Just awful.'

The Standard

Rating:

'For nerds (of which I am one) Deadpool & Wolverine feels like the comic book equivalent of the Superbowl: massive, glitzy, crammed to bursting with stars, blood-pumping action and featuring an excellent soundtrack.'

'There is a plot, but mostly, it’s just an excuse to heap fan service upon fan service. The baddies don’t really matter – which sadly includes Emma Corrin’s villainous Cassandra Nova. Corrin does the best with what they have, but to be honest, the script is flimsy and their role is to plumb the psyches of both heroes and help them get over their traumatic pasts.'

IGN

'Deadpool & Wolverine is an outrageous, consistently funny superhero comedy that succeeds largely thanks to the contagious enthusiasm of leads Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and a surprisingly classy perspective on superhero movie history

'Wade and Logan’s profanity-laced adventure forces the MCU farther out of its comfort zone than it’s been in years, even though old and increasingly frustrating issues like forgettable villains and a barely there plot show that breaking the fourth wall isn’t always enough to solve a movie’s foundational problems.'

The Independent

Rating:

It’s tedious, yet, occasionally, Ryan Reynolds’s fourth wall-allergic “Merc with a Mouth” will pass a note around the table with a penis drawn on it, and everyone can have a quiet, little chuckle to themselves.'

'To put it in terms Marvel’s executives might understand: Deadpool & Wolverine is a meeting that could have been an email.

Empire

Rating:

'The core of it is an extremely affable buddy movie, played to near-perfection by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. They are a dream together, both immensely comfortable in their respective characters and apparently willing to do just about anything to give the audience a laugh.'

Vulture

'Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t a particularly good movie — I’m not even sure it is a movie — but it’s so determined to beat you down with its incessant irreverence that you might find yourself submitting to it.'

'At times, it feels like Deadpool has only two flavors of humor: knowing digs at the industry that spawned him and sex jokes. These are funny the first few times, but after a while you wonder if maybe he should attempt some new material.'

The Telegraph

Rating:

'Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are dumped into a simpering, smirking movie that feels like a spiritual dead end for the franchise.'

'What the pair’s quest actually amounts to – to a degree you suspect even a script this smugly self-aware may not fully appreciate – is a protracted trudge through the cultural wreckage left behind by 20 years of superhero movies, in which nothing of meaning or value can be found.'

'The film is so myopically gripped by the idea of Marvel as endlessly fascinating corporate soap opera that in five years time, you wonder if it will make any sense at all.'

The BBC

Rating:

'Despite a stellar media campaign, the odd-couple buddy team of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is occasionally wry and entertaining, but the action is "a slog".'

'While Jackman is always charismatic, this alternate Wolverine's personality rarely goes beyond snarling at Deadpool in f-bombing language, creating an unbalanced buddy pairing.'

'The fights are about as sophisticated as watching kids in a playground, and they rely heavily on slow motion, as if that will instantly create tension.'

Vanity Fair

'Deadpool & Wolverine does a disarmingly effective job of convincing its audience that this is a film about nostalgia for beloved characters when it’s really just bridging a gap between one company’s output and another’s, smoothing the way for ever more integrated product.'

'The sparring between the silly goose and the tough grump that has been a centerpiece of the film’s marketing never quite sparks; their fight scenes are equally underwhelming, repetitive and terribly hampered by both characters’ invincibility. It’s tough to care when none of it means anything.'

The Guardian

Rating:

'Reynolds is often funny, sometimes very funny, periodically entirely unbearable, often a weird and interesting mix of the three.'

'And yes, there are a lot of laughs here as this film crashes along with plenty of juke-box slams to keep blood-sugar content high, although the humorous aspect is oddly cancelled at the very end with a deadly serious memory-reel over the final credits sentimentally celebrating Hugh Jackman’s best moments within the X-Men series.'
