Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sportspeople

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Wcquidditch (talk | contribs) at 06:02, 26 December 2024 (Listing Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/John_Ward_(pitcher) (assisted)). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sportspeople. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sportspeople|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sportspeople. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

As much as I hate to AfD those that have played a professional game of baseball, after getting a PROD tag I scoured old newspaper sources and was unable to find anything whatsoever on this person trying every combination I could think of. Even the game logs for September 1885 turn up empty to the point that I'm questioning if he ever played at all (he does but it took Peter Morris to find anything and even then it's only primary source stuff). Literally the only thing I found of his existence is the Courier-Journal on Sep. 20, 1885, but even then it's only a sentence and goes more on a tangent involving the far superior John Ward baseball player. Wizardman 00:57, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Withdrawing thanks to the finding of sources, not sure how you found some of those but happy to see it. Wizardman 01:04, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Further note: His death announcements include some further biographical details. See here, here and here. Cbl62 (talk) 02:34, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable tennis player who fails to meet the requirements at WP:GNG and WP:NTENNIS. I am not finding enough sources that are independent of the subject and amount to significant coverage. Fails notability, this was deleted once but recreated with more or less the same thing. I have to repeat what I wrote first time. the article just has a bunch of refs without much to say, from what I found he is a former world youth/cadet (not junior) champion back in 1996 but that's not enough to make him notable. he never won anything in junior or senior level. I can't find any extended discussion of this living person, or any distinction making her automatically notable. Databases record her having had a professional beach volleyball career; she has appeared once or twice in Playboy publications/websites; she ran for local office once. I reduced the article in this edit, removing some poor sources (a magazine search, a Getty images search, a brief TV segment via YouTube) and some unreferenced personal information, but I conclude that notability can't be demonstrated. Fails notability. just being a coach in youth level in a non-Olympic sport is far from being notable. this looks like WP:COI. Sports2021 (talk) 01:05, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete None of the coverage is significant and independent. All of the references mention him as coach of national youth teams but only in the context of the team preparing for competitions, him announcing results, or competitors being invited to training camps. He is either being interviewed or mentioned in one sentence as the national junior team coach. That doesn't show WP notability. Papaursa (talk) 17:40, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

His 46 minutes of professional football is, at best, a weak presumption of notability. My searches didn't yield any WP:SPORTBASIC coverage. Elassona News has an announcement about him which is only 2 sentences long. Larissa Net mentions him once. AELOle has a transfer announcement which is copied from his club's website. There is no good coverage in WP:RS as far as I can see. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 18:12, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Played 2 league matches and 1 cup match before disappearing from professional football. This stats stub gives no indication of passing WP:SPORTBASIC either. Sportsup contains a trivial mention of him in a list of players transferred out. Sigma Live and a few other sources contain a mention of a player of the same name who was the assistant manager of Panachaiki from 1971 to 1978 so clearly a different person (but possibly a relative) given the connection to the same club. In any case, there is no significant coverage of either Timoleon Patronis that I can find. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 18:04, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be a borderline WP:NBIO case that falls just short of passing the criteria. The subject does have some of his own accomplishments in the realm of skateboarding, but the coverage seems insufficient by WP:SIGCOV standards. Source 1 is a passing mention of him in a list of names, source 2 is dead and I couldn't find an archive, source 3 is an interview so not independent, and the only other sources are dead links to what appears to be his defunct website. A WP:BEFORE search led me to minor coverage from skateboarding magazines, and more interviews and primary sources. This guy does appear closer to his own notability than the limited sourcing on this page would portend, but I couldn't find enough coverage of him in my BEFORE search to quite hit the threshold of WP:GNG. Does not pass WP:NLIST from my perspective, and comes across as WP:Fancruft/trivia. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:02, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • You may find it more WP:interesting, but that's not what Wikipedia is based on. Sources! Where are your sources? Clarityfiend (talk) 10:40, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If sources were the only criterion, then we would have hundreds of times more articles than we do now. I was featured in my hometown newspapers covering my Eagle Scout project, so should I have a Wikipedia article? The answer is no, because I do not meet WP:GNG despite the fact I can provide sources. At what point do we stop adding names to these lists? Your argument, to me, seems more along the lines of WP:ILIKEIT than putting forward any policy-based or guideline-based argument. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 19:15, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Your example, an article in a local paper about a local person/event, does not qualifiy as a Wikipedial source. You are confusing verifiability with notability. [Pet peeve alert: Why do you and others keep typing "::*:", "*::", etc., when the asterisk does nothing unless it is at the end?] Clarityfiend (talk) 09:35, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Clarityfiend: You asked about my sources, so I provided a hypothetical to show that I can find sources for someone not notable (I specifically said I do not meet GNG). In reference to the pet peeve, I'm not typing the colons and asterisks. That is Wikipedia's "Reply" function probably just adding a colon to the end of whatever indenting text already exists. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 23:06, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sports writers have written about QBs with wins against all teams as a group (I'm stretching just to include the two who beat the 28 then-existing teams), as demonstrated by WikiOriginal-9. None have written about all but one, with or without weird qualifiers/conditions, as a group (sorry, Collins). Clarityfiend (talk) 04:26, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Clarityfiend: It is certainly less arbitrary than the current situation, with up to four teams listed. For reasons set forth in the discussion above, it makes sense to list those who have only failed to defeat one team because that will include those who spent their entire career with the one team that was therefore not defeated. It is no burden on the encyclopedia to list those who have defeated all but two teams just the same. BD2412 T 18:51, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete In my view, the fact that there is a sports news article every time someone newly meets one of this article's criteria isn't enough to establish WP:NLIST; they all just fall under WP:ROUTINE. Obscure statistics frequently appear in ROUTINE references; we can still take an intellectual assessment of the arbitrariness or cruftiness of the list and decide that it's not worthy of encyclopedic record. Aspirex (talk) 06:30, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    WP:ROUTINE is a guideline connected to events, which doesn't apply here. Let'srun (talk) 20:51, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Wedding announcements, sports scores, crime logs, and other items that tend to get an exemption from newsworthiness discussions should be considered routine." • According to the Russian Wikipedia she was Master of Sports of International Class of the Republic of Kazakhstan [ru], a title which appears to be the highest honor for Kazakh sportspeople, which arguably would pass WP:ANYBIO. She was also vice captain of the national team and seems to have been considered one of the most prominent players on it. Unless there's evidence that some Kazakh newspaper was searched from her time period, I'd lean towards keeping. BeanieFan11 (talk) 23:56, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment – I've found several sources that imply Adiyeva/Mussatayeva was a prominent member of the Kazakh national team and appears to have been a player with whom the public was familiar (1, 2, 3, 4). Her career with Aisulu Almaty – Kazakhstan's most successful women's club team – spanned well over a decade. Despite her apparent importance as a figure in Kazakh women's hockey, I've had the same difficulty as other respondents with finding substantial coverage. The transliteration of her name poses a hurdle for sourcing in English, as I’ve encountered a broad number of transliterations: Viktoriya/Viktoria Adyeva/Adiyeva/Adyyeva Mussatayeva/Musatayeva/Musataeva. In Cyrillic, her married surname is also spelled differently between Russian and Kazakh – Russian Виктория Мусатаева versus Kazakh Виктория Мұсатаева (source). I haven’t found a reliable source for her maiden name in Kazakh, which is another limiting factor.
The Russian Wikipedia article at ru:Мусатаева, Виктория Назымовна is more content-rich than the English language article but its sourcing is also poor.
All this to say, I feel this is very likely a person for whom substantial coverage exists in Kazakh and Russian printed sources but I conceede that, without those sources, she is unlikely to pass GNG. Spitzmauskc (talk) 18:11, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I had also tried to search the archives of Kazakh newspapers (sports.kz, kazpravda) using her Cyrillic name and didn't come across anything more substantial. If actual coverage can be found this page can easily be recreated, but at this moment it totally fails SPORTCRIT. JoelleJay (talk) 02:37, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Draftify as I am struggling to find much of any in-depth coverage of the subject, failing WP:GNG. Despite the WP:REFBOMB, everything that comes up is basic coverage of either his college commitment (or de-commitment) or his transfer to another school, with some quotes and stats sprinkled in. This is what we would call "routine transactional announcements" in other sports. JTtheOG (talk) 04:20, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

unnotable darts player, fails GNG and WP:SPORTCRIT. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 19:59, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Another one who looks notable in Hungary. Found this [26] in Magyar Nemzet, This [27] [] in Nemzeti Sport. In Blikk newspaper there is is this [28] I've only looked at a few Hungarian papers so there may be a lot more. Any thoughts?Canary757 (talk) 07:25, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong keep per above sources identified by Canary757. That Magyar Nemzet article is a brilliant example of sigcov (and even has other outlets reporting on parts of it). Further coverage can be found in Index.hu, M4sport.hu, 24.hu, further coverage in Index.hu, HVG.hu and Origo.hu. Trouble is that googling "Pal Székely" rarely returns any coverage because of Hungarian naming customs which put the name as "Székely Pal", but googling the latter or "Székely Penge" finds some very strong coverage indicating he's nationally notable in Hungary. ser! (chat to me - see my edits) 09:58, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Nemzet article has only a paragraph of coverage; the rest is interview quotes which do not count towards GNG as primary and non-independent. The first three other sources also appear to be just Q&A interviews. Can you find some non-interview coverage of him? JoelleJay (talk) 22:21, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm curious about the status of interviews; when I check GNG, the reference to secondary sources is that they need "at least one secondary source" (which in this situation would be the latter Index article) and then says sources "should" be secondary. Then when I check WP:PRIMARY it says "(depending on context) interviews", which links me to WP:Reliable_sources#News organizations, in which there is... nothing listed about the aforementioned interviews. Is the inference here that any sort of interview content, regardless of how widespread or what source it's in, is entirely worthless and bunk in determining notability? ser! (chat to me - see my edits) 16:06, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The general consensus has been that secondary content from the interviewer, e.g. background on the interviewee prepared before the interview, can count towards GNG if it's SIGCOV, but anything coming from the interviewee (either directly in quotes or lightly paraphrased by the interviewer) is not independent or secondary. I'd say the Index article is verging on a routine recap (personally I would classify it as fully routine, as it's just briefly reporting his performance in one tournament). JoelleJay (talk) 20:24, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see, thanks for the clarification. Well, I'm finding it hard, owing to my lack of Hungarian (I'm presuming there may be more hidden mentions such as the "Székely Palnak" ones that wouldn't initially come up on search) to find further sources. I'll just hope that whoever closes this will note the various Hungarian national sporting outlets that've gone to the bother of interviewing the subject in detail; even if not counted in the rule-based notability check, it's at least some sort of background showing this isn't just some complete unnotable. ser! Seeing there are multiple Italian Ruby players up here made be look below WP:SPORTCRIT to see if there was a Rugby specific guideline. Seeing that there is WP:NRODEO but no Rugby guideline.
