Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Greece

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Greece. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Greece|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Greece. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Europe.

Angelos Bountalis (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Although the article is incredibly detailed, there are no sources at all as the one source used is just a link to a website with no apparent mention of Bountalis. I have searched in Greek but can't find anything about him. No sign of WP:GNG and WP:SPORTBASIC despite apparently having a very eventful amateur career. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 10:18, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you know him personally, then you have a conflict of interest. Please respond to the request to declare COI on your talk page. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 14:05, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I kmow him because i work as a scouter in football industry, i know many players around Netherlands and Europe. Footballlover23 (talk) 15:09, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That still falls under Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. More to the point, please add some proper news sources to the Bountalis article. The one that you have included doesn't even mention him. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 15:17, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Delete, the single source doesn't even mention him. History6042😊 (Contact me) 15:59, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Charis Fourkiotis (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

His 46 minutes of professional football is, at best, a weak presumption of notability. My searches didn't yield any WP:SPORTBASIC coverage. Elassona News has an announcement about him which is only 2 sentences long. Larissa Net mentions him once. AELOle has a transfer announcement which is copied from his club's website. There is no good coverage in WP:RS as far as I can see. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 18:12, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Timoleon Patronis (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Played 2 league matches and 1 cup match before disappearing from professional football. This stats stub gives no indication of passing WP:SPORTBASIC either. Sportsup contains a trivial mention of him in a list of players transferred out. Sigma Live and a few other sources contain a mention of a player of the same name who was the assistant manager of Panachaiki from 1971 to 1978 so clearly a different person (but possibly a relative) given the connection to the same club. In any case, there is no significant coverage of either Timoleon Patronis that I can find. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 18:04, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pantodapoi (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Unreferenced stub gives a definition for "Pantodapoi" which appears to be original research as the main sources found online are product pages for "Pantodapoi Phalangite" miniatures made by a maker called "Xyston". Does not meet WP:GNG. Cielquiparle (talk) 04:27, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: I'm not expert enough with Greek military units to feel confident in voting, but I did check some typical reference sources, including Harper's Dictionary of Classical Antiquities and Pauly-Wissowa, neither of which has an entry for "pantodapoi". I also checked under "auxiles" or related headwords. A broad search of the classical materials at Perseus turned up the word with reference to a kind of sauce (perhaps I misunderstood) and in a couple of other places, but not with reference to soldiers. A Google search for "pantodapoi soldiers" turned up a set of circular-looking definitions, perhaps based on this article or wherever its definition came from in the first place.
I suspect that what has happened here is that the article's creator confused a description of some auxiliary soldiers with a name for their unit: pantodapoi phalangites means "miscellaneous soldiers (in a phalanx)", not "a particular type of soldiers (natives) making up a phalanx". But it would be nice to see if anyone with more expertise in Greek military history concurs with this. Not certain that the general notability guideline is what's relevant here; if the definition were correct, I think the topic would be notable. But if, as I believe, the article is the result of a misunderstanding, then it can be deleted as though it were a hoax (albeit an accidental one).
