Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sportspeople

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sportspeople. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sportspeople|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sportspeople. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Redirect to Slovakia at the 2004 Summer Olympics as ATD because I could not find any in-depth coverage of this athlete to meet WP:GNG.

This AfD might be exactly the same issue as with Peter Kondrát I nominated back in January under my old username (CuteDolphin712). Since Martin Liška was born in Brno, Czech Republic, but represents Slovakia, I don't know which language of source is primary.

  • The only decent site I found in Slovak language is SME but it looks nowhere near significant.
  • Oddly enough, Czech media IDNES (2016, 2018, 2022) and Czech Television have articles of a horseback rider of the same name. However, the first source by IDNES tells said jockey turned 39 thus clearly not the same men as this cyclist. Without evidence of cyclist Liška being a horse jockey in his hometown, this case fails WP:V.

Although subject may be covered by WP:NCRICKET (Additionally, cricketers who have played at the highest domestic level [...] may have sufficient coverage about them to justify an article, but it should not be assumed to exist without further proof), with a single appearance for a club side more than 20 years ago, there is no indication the subject has received significant coverage to pass the general notability guideline. Fails WP:GNG and WP:SPORTBASIC #5 (Sports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources.")

I created the article in 2020 when the old WP:NGRIDIRON presumed notability for NFL players -- we have database sources showing that Cleve appeared in 19 NFL games as a back and end from 1921-1924. When the presumption was reversed, User:Hey man im josh correctly tagged the article due to the need for additional sources. I thought that someone who appeared in 19 NFL games would have WP:SIGCOV, but my follow-up searches in 2022 didn't find any. I searched again today but didn't find anything rising to the level of SIGCOV. (FWIW: I did find some passing references where his given name was listed as "Ainar" [1] and others as "Einar" [2] [3].)

Despite my efforts, the article still does not comply with our guidelines, so it's time for me to throw in the towel -- unless someone can dig up SIGCOV that I've been unable to find. Cbl62 (talk) 00:37, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mahmutaj never played in a professional league and the coverage to date isn't enough for WP:SIGCOV, in my view. Panorama 1 is just an announcement of being released, Panorama 2 is just a direct quote from Mahmutaj with no third party analysis and Sport Ekspres represents the best source on him but it still only confirms that he scored 19 goals for Luftëtari and played at under-17 level for Albania, which I would say falls just short of the depth required. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:16, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This interview is an example of one that would count as having at least some third party analysis (of the tennis player Carlos Alcaraz). Clariniie I am aware that that's a different sport, though. Good interview sources for football look like The Guardian (Leah Williamson interview) and BBC (Aitana Bonmatí interview). Notice how the articles are written outside of a normal Q&A format and how most of them start with some background info on the interviewee first, which automatically pushes it to SIGCOV. The articles do more than just merely regurgitate the interview. If someone can find similar calibre sourcing for Mahmutaj, I will happily withdraw my support for deletion. Yet another long-unsourced article of a Slovak men's footballer who seems to have a minor career. According to Soccerway, his career in higher level clubs lasted between 107 and 800 minutes. Footballer whose article has no footnotes, and whose only references are external links to database entries, and so does not meet general notability or sports notability in its current state. The article says that he played for the Spanish national team, which is probably true but unverified, and there isn't a football notability guideline that says that this is notability or presumed notability. The Heymann criterion is to find two reliable sources that provide significant coverage within seven days.

  • Keep [8], [9], lets throw a few more sources into this bout! Really Robert, this was not a good candidate for AfD. The article certainly needs an improvement, but the negation of sources in the article isn't a reason for deletion. Govvy (talk) 18:44, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. The fact that the sources are related to the speedway does not make them non-independent. I have set up a discussion here Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Speedway_related_sources. LibStar (talk) 23:48, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: I saw the RSN discussion first, so I do not plan to vote, but to give my opinion from my limited perspective. Having taken a look at Scunthorpe Scorpions, which looks like two different teams on one article, I can count about five dozen riders that have articles. Of the "Notable riders," most of them use "speedway related sources" in their articles with British Speedway cited between two and three dozen times. (More problematic, but farther outside of the discussion is that at least one article is citing sources that are MREL and GUNREL.)
Overall, the issue over the specific sources is going to have an effect on other articles. If deemed a problem, then there will need to be more AfD discussions in the near future; while if deemed acceptable could lead to additional article creations. I am of the opinion that redirects to the team articles could be more preferred than deletion and that some information might be includable in the various team articles. That said, I am unsure if the sources are a problem on these rider articles. --Super Goku V (talk) 06:19, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So what exactly makes this guy notable? Being the son of Michael Vaughan, is all I can tell. Even that, most of the article are just WP:RESULTS, with no focus on her. Most of the article looks like wants to present the wrestler as notable by comparation. Subject person played only 1 List-A and 2 First class match. Does WP:GNG surpasses WP:NCRICK? Twinkle1990 (talk) 15:42, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Twinkle1990: - can I just point out NSPORT states that "Failing to meet the criteria in this guideline means that notability will need to be established in other ways (for example, the general notability guideline...) - so all NSPORT is saying that people who meet those criteria are considered notable, but not meeting those criteria doesn't automatically make them non-notable. Redirect to ISU_Junior_Grand_Prix_in_Croatia#Women's_singles. Achievements are insufficient to meet WP:NSKATE. I have not found any secondary sources that speak directly about her, only mentioning her in passing. By the way, references 1 and 3 do not work, and 2nd gives meager performance statistics. The page was previously deleted because it fails WP:NFOOTY and WP:GNG and it still holds true. Coderzombie (talk) 10:25, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Most of these sources are interviews and paid promotions and do not help pass WP:NFOOTY. The player has not garnered significant reliable coverage for any other achievements because he has not played at an international level and he has not played for an entirely professional league to satisfy WP:GNG. He is an upcoming player but it is too early to warrant a page on this subject because of insufficient significant achievements.

RangersRus (talk) 12:37, 27 June 2024 (UTC)'[reply]

ALl of the sources have tons of secondary coverage that I will gladly cite if asked and there is no indication that any of them are paid promotions... Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 05:34, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thats one of my more minor points, my point is that he was considered such a good player and significant figure in Indian lower leagues that he was called up to senior nationl team. This proves my point that all delete votes are by users who seldom vote on football deletion debates who still think that players have to both meet WP:GNG and WP:NFOOTBALL. Either way, he has many secondary sources about him. Article needs improvement, not deletion. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 23:16, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I never said has to meet both WP:GNG and WP:NFOOTBALL. I am saying he passes neither. Doesn't pass WP:NFOOTBALL because he hasn't played professional football and the sources that exist don't justify WP:GNG Coderzombie (talk) 09:00, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tell me how this article doesnt meet WP:GNG. Im listening... just because he played in thje lower leagues doesnt meen he was a clear topic of interest in Indian football who is probably only lower league Indian palyer to be called up to senior national team.. • Keep These are excellent references. The article is crap, but the subject clearly meets GNG. The previous deletion discussion years ago is irrelevant, given the amount of media coverage is major national papers since then. The GNG policy clearly supports keeping. I don't see what policy supports deletion. Nfitz (talk) 17:19, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - the comment about him being an "upcoming player" is nonsense as the subject is 34 years old. Per Das osmnezz and Nfitz, I cannot see any policy-based arguments for deletion here. The sources mentioned in this discussion would help the development of the article, but coupled with what is already in place there, they appear to establish a sufficient level of notability. C679 16:02, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am unable to find enough coverage of this American rugby player to meet WP:GNG or WP:SPORTSPERSON. My searches yielded only trivial mentions. A possible redirect is 2017 Rugby League World Cup squads#United States. JTtheOG (talk) 06:53, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep, I've seen similarly irrelevant sports players with articles about them. Maurnxiao (talk) 19:22, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not an argument to keep an article. JTtheOG (talk) 19:41, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
From that website:

This may be an argument that this article is not bad enough to be speedily deleted; but that does not mean it should be kept.

So unless I misinterpreted which is possible, is there any rush to get this article removed? Why not improve it? Maurnxiao (talk) 19:48, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. In this case, "speedily delete" refers to speedy deletion, a separate, much quicker procedure which does not need a discussion to delete a page. This rugby article is not eligible to be deleted through that medium. However, in my opinion, the subject has not received significant coverage from reliable sources that cover him directly and in detail and thus might fail our general notability guidelines, which is why I brought it to a discussion. Redirect to  United States men nationa rugby league team#Current squad. Delete. Doesn't pass WP:RU/N, because on an inernational level, he played for United States men's national rugby league team (Eagles), but the player is presumed notable if he played for United States men's national rugby union team (Hawks). Per WP:RU/N USA domestic leagues aren't notable. Doesn't pass WP:SIGCOV, I haven't found any secondary sources that relate directly to the subject. Tau Corvi (talk) 00:55, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not in the current squad so the redirect there would not be useful and only played one match at world cup, an alternative could be Colonial Cup (rugby league), but lack of significant coverage makes delete seem a reasonable option. EdwardUK (talk) 15:12, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect to Slovakia at the 2014 Winter Olympics#Luge as ATD because I could not find any in-depth coverage about this luger to meet WP:GNG. All I found on news websites were passing mentions of his participation at the tournament. He was not even on top three luge winners. This article has been deleted from Slovak Wikipedia on 18 November 2018, possibly due to BLP concerns. The only interlanguage wiki available is Norsk Bokmål (Norwegian) Wikipedia but it listed exactly the same sources as the English article. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. • Redirect as suggested as an AtD. We've been presented with sporting results, and from that we're supposed to build a biography of a living human being? WP:SPORTSPERSON requires at least one source which directly details the subject. Nothing like that here. BusterD (talk) 11:28, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
