I saw this at a small convention a few days ago and was quite surprised how well the animation quality held up even after all these years. But we are kind of used to that when it comes to Ghibli productions, aren't we.
It's a rather quiet movie without any real loud moments. And yet there is drama there and conflict. But it is not overdrawn in any kind of way. It is daily life and coming of age instead. And maybe that's why it ends up leaving the watcher with quite an impression.
If you're ever in the mood for something quiet and calm, but not shallow at it and with actual story to tell, this definitely should go on your list.
