GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/Gray News) - Police in Georgia are investigating a possible child drowning.

According to the Grovetown Police Department, first responders were called Thursday night about a possible drowning at an area home.

Arriving officers said they found a 6-year-old child unresponsive on the bathroom floor.

Emergency medical workers performed lifesaving efforts on the child, but she ultimately died.

Investigators identified the child as 6-year-old Adelia Tutt.

According to police chief Jamey Kitchens, Adelia was bathing with her 4-year-old sibling in a garden-style tub when for reasons yet to be determined, she became unresponsive and wound up face down in the water.

The 4-year-old child who was also in the tub was found uninjured and told police that Adelia had “fallen asleep” while the two were bathing.

Kitchens said the girl’s father was home and had stepped onto the porch to take a phone call before returning inside and discovering Adelia in the tub.

Adelia’s mother was out of town when the drowning occurred but has since returned, police said.

No visible signs of injury or trauma were observed on Adelia and her body was transported to a crime lab for an autopsy.

Police said Adelia’s parents are cooperating with their investigation.

The Department of Family and Children Services in Georgia was notified of the situation and has temporarily placed Adelia’s other siblings, the 4-year-old and a 14-year-old with special needs, with relatives.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Tutt family during this terrible time,” the Grovetown Police Department shared.

Adelia’s cause of death has not yet been determined. Police said their investigation remains ongoing.
