Sunday Night Football heads to Detroit on Wild Card Weekend with the Lions hosting their first playoff game since 1993 with Matthew Stafford and the Rams coming to Motor City. Of course, this game is rife with storylines given how long it has been since Detroit won the NFC North and hosted a playoff game, and the prize is having to face its former franchise quarterback in Stafford. Trading Stafford gave Detroit its current quarterback, Jared Goff, who had a career year by throwing for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns. For all of Detroit's accolades on offense, the defense may be the key to advancing. The Lions allowed the second-most points among playoff teams, better only than the Eagles. The run defense has been as stingy as any in the league, but the secondary has been suspect. That could prove to be problematic in a dome setting facing a strong quarterback surrounded by game-breakers like Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua.
Los Angeles even making the postseason is an accomplishment. Following a weak title defense in 2022 and few notable offseason additions, many projected the Rams to be more likely to be in the running for a Top 5 pick than a playoff spot. However, Stafford's renaissance along with the unexpected emergence of rookie fifth-rounder, Puka Nacua, has the Rams offense back in elite form. The defense has been unspectacular but steady and certainly competent enough to pose problems for Detroit.
In terms of spread performance this year, the Lions were 12-5 ATS overall and 5-3 against the spread at home. The Rams, meanwhile, were 10-6-1 ATS and 5-3-1 against the spread on the road. The line in this game opened with Detroit being 3.5-point favorites but has since been adjusted to 3.0 at most online sportsbooks.
