Hi there, I have questions for the artist? How do you learn to draw sign language for pink/white pearl with using her hands? Do you learn them or you have to look up reference? If you look up reference of sigh language can you share us the link of it?
I just google it. No, I’m serious. I just. Open up google. And do research. Type in ____ in ASL for a start.
I usually end up referencing sites like https://www.handspeak.com/ for common words, and then check grammatical sources for word-order and stressing important words/etc. Sometimes I end up lost in a YouTube video compilation of ASL lessons in order to get an idea of what the native signers would use in that context.
After I have the general idea of what signs I need and in what order, I’ll throw together a rough draft sketch and throw it at some of my lovely ASL-native-speaker volunteers and ask them if it makes sense/sounds natural!
They have been INCREDIBLY kind to help me out during their free time, and I’m forever grateful. :>
I just got caught up and I noticed just before Rose saves them, Earl and Steven were speaking in sign and you gave translation for it. I remember a previous ask where you said you refuse to put subtitles on the sign language in this comic. May I ask what changed your mind? (On that note, I appreciate the translation as someone who knows very little sign language.)
Realistically the conversation at that point was too complex to guess at without clues and too vital to the story. Also, I couldn’t draw EVERY sign in that exchange - too much! So I drew them signing one of the things in the sentence and wrote the rest out in English.
Here, Steven is signing LOOK FOR / SEARCH.
Earl is siging DANGEROUS. Steven is signing HELP.
Steven is signing SAME.
Even people who understand ASL kind of need context for the signs. They can probably pick it up, but it makes it more clear with the English translations shown.
Also, given that in the past, even the most simple ASL signs which were immediately paraphrased by other characters would invite 30+ asks into my inbox saying ‘pls tell me what that sign says :(’ I knew that if I left it without any scripting I would be looking at some very grumpy readers.
I fell to peer pressure. Sorry! But honestly, I don’t anticipate translating EVERY sign from here on out. Only more complex sentences like these.

Very old. Irritable, loner, pessimist. Perpetually tired. Cracks easily, but repairs himself with his own resin. Has a Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle trapped in his chest. The beetle's horn sticks out of their chest, so their shirt is always unbuttoned. He prefers to be called Amber, but everyone has adopted the nickname "Horns" for him because of his beetle. They only wear powder on their face, at the other gems' request (He prefers not to wear any at all). Amber resin can leak out of their body if they break or cry. Their arms and legs melt into resin during combat to trap their foes, or create a durable shield against waves of artillery. They do not carry a sword, as they believe they've perfected the art of fighting using their own body after many, many years.
