     Brig.-Gen. Sir Charles Preston Crewe was born on 11 January 1858.1 He was the son of Captain Frederick Crewe and Eliza Maria Chamier.1 He married Helen Agnes Josephine Orpen, daughter of Joseph Millered Orpen and Elisa Pauline Rolland, on 11 July 1887.2 He died on 21 July 1936 at age 78.1
     He fought in the Kaffir War between 1878 and 1879.1 He fought in the Basutoland War between 1880 and 1881.1 He held the office of Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) [Cape of Good Hope] between 1899 and 1910.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier-General in the South African Defence Force.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1 He was awarded the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Officers' Decoration (V.D.)1 He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1902.1 He held the office of Colonial Secretary of the Cape of Good Hope between 1904 and 1907.1 He held the office of Secretary for Agriculture [Cape of Good Hope] between 1907 and 1908.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.)1 He held the office of Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) [Union of South Africa] between 1910 and 1919, for East London.1 He fought in the First World War, in East Africa.1 He was chief owner of the East London Daily Despatch and the Queentown Daily Representative.1

     Helen Agnes Josephine Orpen was born on 1 May 1863 at Grahamstown, Cape Province, South Africa.2 She was the daughter of Joseph Millered Orpen and Elisa Pauline Rolland.1,2 She married Brig.-Gen. Sir Charles Preston Crewe, son of Captain Frederick Crewe and Eliza Maria Chamier, on 11 July 1887.1 She died on 28 April 1938 at age 74.2
     From 11 July 1887, her married name became Crewe.1 She was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1918.1

     Ranulphe Orpen Crewe was the son of Brig.-Gen. Sir Charles Preston Crewe and Helen Agnes Josephine Orpen.1 He married, firstly, Elaine Mary Collier, daughter of T. Collier, in January 1927.1 He married, secondly, Dorothy Alice Hamilton, daughter of William Drummond Hamilton and Alice Josephine Kinahan, on 17 December 1930.1 He died on 23 March 1937.1
