What to Know

Critics Consensus

Landman plumbs much of the same territory as other Taylor Sheridan-penned series, but having Billy Bob Thornton on hand turns this Texas crude into highly watchable fuel.

John Powers NPR Like Tommy, "Landman" knows all the things that are wrong about our addiction to oil. But it also hints at the naivete of those who think the world could easily go into rehab. Nov 26, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Working his way through the capitalism-outweighs-climate monologues with pithy, cynical ease, Billy Bob Thornton is ideal casting as Tommy Norris. Nov 22, 2024 Full Review Kelly Lawler USA Today Slapped together with little regard to a sensible framework or even characters whose names you can remember, "Landman" is Sheridan's laziest work, and his most obscene. Rated: 1/4 Nov 19, 2024 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Focused on the 21st century oil boom in West Texas, Taylor Sheridan's engaging new series stars Billy Bob Thornton as a thoroughly disgruntled, disillusioned crisis-management expert, coping with the ridiculously sexy, skimpily clad women in his life. Rated: 8/10 Dec 21, 2024 Full Review Ty'Kira Smalls Common Sense Media This series is fired up with gritty characters and a gripping storyline. Dec 4, 2024 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk Sheridan has been amassing an extraordinary string of credits... Now he’s devised a new series about the Texas oil industry, Landman, with a starring role which fits Billy Bob Thornton like a favourite sweat-stained stetson. charlene E I was really excited for this show, Love Jon Hamm and Billie Bob, It looked like it had great potential. Well, looks can be deceiving. Some of the facts that Billy Bob gives are interesting and would be great for Trivial Pursuit. The main problem I had watching this is the female characters. Who ever wrote this may need professional help. To start - the daughter. Her character is a beautiful 17yearv old who acts like a terribly spoiled 10 year old. Maybe 8 year old. She runs around in either a bikini or something incredibly skimpy and there are so many closeups of her ass. What this has to do with the plot is beyond me. Her dialog is insipid and idiotic at best, In one scene she has her dad (Billie Bob) bring her a hamburger and 3 fries. Not 3 orders of fries - just 3 fries. He brings the food home and she is so upset that he brought a full order of fries. Billie Bob says he'll eat them and she says absolutely not. She orders him to throw them out NOW. Then the overly sexualized relationship with Billie Bob is very disturbing. She get upset after a breakup with a boyfriend and runs to Billie Bob, who is in bed) . He gets her in the bed to comfort her and that apparently is an arrangement that will continue. Mind you, this is a huge home with lots of space. In a subsequent scene Billie Bob is angry at her and tells her he won't be coming to bed, he will sleep on the couch??!?? Then there is the ex wife who also runs around in next to nothing. She is at the country club pool with her 17 year old daughter and keeps the booze flowing. They have insipid conversations about pedicures and selfies. I guess all women in that part of the country have low intelligence and values. Overall the show has some great actors with horrible scripting. Very disappointing. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review James C Like it, but it is a little over the top on the crazy wife side of things. 2nd season is justified. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review sara lynn m Taylor Sheridan must be getting lazy with all the shows he is turning out. Regardless of my issues with the show, I did not find it to be a compelling watch either. I do not think Sheridan actually wrote this one. If he did, he went from writing one of the strongest and best female characters....in Beth Dutton....to the worst. I gave up after two episodes. He went the opposite way with this one, with a seemingly cheap and in my opinion sickening grab for ratings. I don't care to watch a dopey teenage girl run around in her underwear for two episodes...maybe more. It's absolutely not appropriate nor realistic, I and I'd say ALL teenage girls dont hang out with their Dad in their underwear. You drove away female viewers and fathers alike. I've seen all Taylor Sheridans work since Yellowstone, I will be hesitant to ever watch anything new of his again after this. The strongest female ever written followed up by something that falls in line with the manosphere movement? No thank you. If the point is to objectify women for ratings, at least have the decency to do it with a WOMAN. I am unbelievably outraged and have carefully worded my review. I am not the offensive party here, I am explaining how I was offended by the show...like fellow reviewers Louis and Darrin (male) who gives me hope for us. Apparently in later episodes I couldn't stomach watching, the teenage girl spoke with her Dad about her boyfriend coming on her! Gross and OFFENSIVE on their part. Again I did not talk to my Dad about my sexual exploits in detail as a high schooler, nor do any young girls I'd go as far as to say. I have a copy of my review and will take action if it disappears...like my last one. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Anon Y Taylor Sheridan really needs to put more thought into his writing. It’s so insanely unrealistic and poorly executed. The daughter and mother in this show literally make this it unwatchable. Don’t waste your time unless you want a mind numbing experience. The only well written Taylor Sheridan show is Tulsa King and trust me, I’ve been forced by my wife to watch them all. This one is by far the worst, though. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review David A I was kinda roped into watching the first episode, but I was hooked fast. Ali Larter and Michelle Randolph give comedic balance to the more dramatic elements. I detracted a star because of the forced side plot with Billy Bob's son. I hope they focus more on the business end, and I hope to see more of Demi Moore. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Lynn L Billy Bob Thornton is the best part of the show. The writing is very weak and the storyline about the ex-wife and the daughter is as annoying as hell. When the daughter is in a scene, I feel like I’m watching the old movie Porky’s, I expected more out of this writer! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
