State Park and Trails
Whether you’re into camping, hiking, and fishing or spelunking, horse trails, and picnics, the state park offers outdoor adventures for everyone.
Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park surrounds Historic Forestville. This park features Mystery Cave tours, tent and camper cabin camping, horseback riding and a horse camp, hiking trails, and trout fishing.
Check into the main park office to pick up a state park pass. Maps for Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park can be found at the main park offices or at the Historic Forestville visitor center.
Cave tours
Explore Mystery Cave, operated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and see stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, beautiful underground pools, and a maze of interconnecting passages. Modern lighting and walkways enhance accessible tours. Tours are available through the DNR.
Camping
Whether you’re staying a week or a weekend, the park offers tent camping sites, camper cabins, and a horse camp for your enjoyment. If you plan to spend the night, make sure to make your reservation through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources ahead of time.
Horse trails
Bring your horse and explore the scenic horse trails found throughout the State Park. Hitch your horses to the hitching posts found on site and stay a while to explore the site. The trails are surfaced with crushed rock and require some fording. Shod horses are recommended, and a Minnesota Trail Pass is required. Trails are typically open early May to late October.
Fishing
Trout streams are abundant both inside and outside the state park. A list of where to fish can be found on the DNR’s Fillmore County Fishing Guide.
Biking, hiking, skiing, birding, and more
Hiking and horse trails run through and connect to Historic Forestville. The Root River State Trail offers biking opportunities and can be accessed in the neighboring towns of Preston or Fountain.
In the winter months, visitors can also enjoy cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
The park is an excellent birding location in any season.
