Mechanical Engineering Student | LU Rock Climbing Team | PIPE-FLO, AutoCAD, REVIT, SolidWorks | Relationally Driven
Today is my last day of interning with DLB Associates this summer. I cannot emphasize enough how appreciative I am of this firm and its people! I learned so much, and was able to work on some amazing projects with my team! I felt so supported by my manager Jaron Deal, and peer buddy Alan Fitts. I would also like to shout out Neil Chauhan and Heather Lombardo for their consistent encouragement and positivity. For most of the summer, I worked on a comprehensive PIPE-FLO model of a chilled water system in a data center. Through that model, I learned about chilled water systems, chillers, pressure, flow, how pumps work within those systems, different kinds of valves, design of a data center, and overall how to solve problems as we ran the simulation. After designing the model, Jaron, Alan and I wrote a report on the model and various different failure scenarios, which are an essential part of design for mission critical facilities. Through the report, I got to work on technical communication and documentation, and failure analysis. Aside from the PIPE-FLO project, I spent a lot of time working on Revit models for data centers as well. In a similar vein as my PIPE-FLO model, I helped to design a chilled water system for a mission critical data center. Revit is an extremely powerful tool that I am really excited to continue learning. One of my favorite parts of engineering is design work, so I really enjoyed my time on this software. Apart from the design aspect in Revit, I also learned how to select and place expansion tanks in a model for certain projects. A few days of my summer I spent working on AutoCAD design for mechanical systems and worked with Trane/Trace for heating loads. Already having some experience with both, it was fun to be able to go back and grow my skills. Along with hard skills concerning software and design, I would also like to emphasize the soft skills that I learned to apply more deeply this summer. I wrote "A Letter to Summer Interns" to share those aspects of my learning with future interns/ Co-op members. That document is attached. It is such a blessing to me to have been able to learn from and contribute so much to DLB this summer. This is the sort of work that feels significant and meaningful. I am looking forward to connecting with DLB Associates in the future!

Spacecraft Systems Engineer @ Boeing | Founder @ Astranavem | NextGen Collective 30u30 Honoree | Aerospace Career Development | Part-time Inventor | Full-time Innovator | Empowering the next Space Generation 🚀
Ah yes, I remember when I got picked for my very first internship in systems engineering without having a clue in the world what it was. 😅 How did you find yourself in Systems Engineering? It is interesting to note that although there have been a growing number of systems engineering degree programs and a wider reach towards awareness of the discipline... 1. It is still not a widely understood role for the general public. 🌐 2. It is still not a commonly pursued line of study amongst younger folk. 👨🎓 3. It is still dominated by the very first generations to encounter it. 📊 I wonder when we will stop being chosen by Systems Engineering... And actually start picking Systems Engineering ourselves. 🤔 Any thoughts from my fellow Systems Engineers out there? #systemsengineering #meme

"Why did you want to become an engineer?" We continue our E-Week celebration by shining a light on Brynna Bartlett, EI. Brynna joined the team full-time two years ago after interning with Matthews | DCCM during her final two semesters at UNF. Describe your job in one sentence As a civil engineer, I design stormwater management facilities and lift stations. What's something you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy playing pickleball outside of work. Why did you want to become an engineer? When I was interning at a prosthetics office in college, I realized I was drawn to the design aspects of the field which is why I shifted my attention to engineering. There is something so cool about designing a product and seeing it constructed. Surprising or fun fact about yourself. I have trained two service dogs. Any advice for STEM students/future engineers? If you are thinking about a career in STEM get involved early with internships or research opportunities to find out what field interests you. #MatthewsDCCM #EWeek #EWeek2024 #CivilEngineers #STEM

Principal Instructor at University of Colorado, Boulder, Founder, Construction-Education, and Principal Training Specialist at Safety Function
Summer has arrived and newbies are joining your projects. Go back in time and recall your first days in construction. The jobsite looks and sounds chaotic. The jargon used on site sounds like a foreign language. Here is a recent quote from a young field engineer - "As a novice in the industry, I felt an overall uncertainty about all the details. I had to learn on the fly - leaving me quietly Googling terms or asking embarrassing questions to my superintendent." We're asking new interns and engineers to navigate a complex construction environment while also performing important tasks. For the sake of safety, production, quality and all the other critical factors on a project, put yourself in their shoes and take time to train and orient your new folks this summer. If you're looking for time-tested resources, Construction-Education can help.

As always, the intern soils it…. But in our field, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. 😎 I recently had an extremely inspiring day with one of our summer interns, Trebor Moreno showing him the ropes (and rods) of density testing for the soils beneath a future senior housing development. Trebor, a sophomore and fellow Oredigger from the Colorado School of Mines, is a civil engineering major who's balancing a tough academic schedule, being a student-athlete wrestler, and working a full-time job. One thing that blew me away? Trebor's dedication and hustle—he's taking summer classes like physics 2 (which we all know is NOT easy and something I took my senior year) and chemistry 2 to get ahead, working full-time with us while completing certifications, all while training for his next wrestling season. The real highlight was his infectious enthusiasm and attitude - especially his knack for asking insightful questions, and his readiness to dive into new challenges. This guy definitely has a bright future ahead of him and is going to be one helluva engineer! I promised Trebor I'd share his story and that I would ask my network this question to help navigate his future career: What advice would you give to your younger self when you were just starting out as an intern? My two cents? Be open to a world of opportunities. You don't need to have it all figured out right away. Embrace the journey, explore diverse paths, and discover what truly aligns with your strengths and passions.♥️ Please don’t hesitate to connect or reach out to Trebor, he is looking to network and get immersed into our industry!! *Note that the views expressed on this page are mine only and do not reflect or represent the views of Braun Intertec Corporation* #mentorship #construction #internship #network #engineering

CEO at ABES Engineering. Identified as a Game Changer Entrepreneur by the White House. Let's do Business Together.
I’m excited to announce that we have two interns with us this summer through the Peer Power Earn and Learn program, a program supported by Memphis-Shelby County Schools Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) . This fantastic program allows youth to gain real-world experience with companies, while earning a solid wage. It’s been a rewarding experience to have our interns join the team for the summer, and we hope they will walk away with great memories and solid experiences. Today, I’d like to introduce you Zaramagi Kayihura “Z” Espoir. Z is 19 years old and a junior at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (Go Vol!!!). What does your internship at ABES entail? 👷 One of my duties is learning and working on AutoCAD and Civil 3D designs, which includes understanding and applying company and industry standards. I have also been able to learn the BlueBeam software, and I have started using it to generate quantity takeoffs. What are your career goals? I am majoring in aerospace engineering. 🚀 I want to work in rocket propulsion and/or guidance, but just about everything in the aerospace field excites me. What are some of your hobbies? I am a part of my school’s rocketry team. I like to work out and play basketball in my free time. 🏀 I also play a little bit of piano. 🎹 What do you enjoy most about the ABES internship? I have enjoyed learning the way an engineering business operates and seeing the different roles everybody plays in ensuring both that work is coming in, as well as that the clients’ expectations are exceeded. What’s one thing you’ve learned about engineering or entrepreneurship? I have learned that it’s important to always keep a growth mindset throughout one’s career. 📈 #internship #summerinternship #aerospaceengineering
