"Why did you want to become an engineer?" We continue our E-Week celebration by shining a light on Brynna Bartlett, EI. Brynna joined the team full-time two years ago after interning with Matthews | DCCM during her final two semesters at UNF. Describe your job in one sentence As a civil engineer, I design stormwater management facilities and lift stations. What's something you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy playing pickleball outside of work. Why did you want to become an engineer? When I was interning at a prosthetics office in college, I realized I was drawn to the design aspects of the field which is why I shifted my attention to engineering. There is something so cool about designing a product and seeing it constructed. Surprising or fun fact about yourself. I have trained two service dogs. Any advice for STEM students/future engineers? As always, the intern soils it…. But in our field, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. 😎 I recently had an extremely inspiring day with one of our summer interns, Trebor Moreno showing him the ropes (and rods) of density testing for the soils beneath a future senior housing development. Trebor, a sophomore and fellow Oredigger from the Colorado School of Mines, is a civil engineering major who's balancing a tough academic schedule, being a student-athlete wrestler, and working a full-time job. One thing that blew me away? Trebor's dedication and hustle—he's taking summer classes like physics 2 (which we all know is NOT easy and something I took my senior year) and chemistry 2 to get ahead, working full-time with us while completing certifications, all while training for his next wrestling season. The real highlight was his infectious enthusiasm and attitude - especially his knack for asking insightful questions, and his readiness to dive into new challenges. This guy definitely has a bright future ahead of him and is going to be one helluva engineer! I promised Trebor I'd share his story and that I would ask my network this question to help navigate his future career: What advice would you give to your younger self when you were just starting out as an intern? My two cents? Be open to a world of opportunities. You don't need to have it all figured out right away. Overcoming Challenges - Staying Resilient: My Civil Engineering Journey There are times during my Civil Engineering journey when the weight of the world seems to be on my shoulders. Standing under the scorching 1pm sun during the day or in the freezing cold at night all in the name of working and gathering experience on site. Stress, frustration, and even thoughts of quitting clouded my mind. I have questioned my ability and wondered if I made the right choice of career. But amidst the storm, I have always found solace in something powerful: the power of Christian faith and the human connection. My faith in God provided a steady anchor during tumultuous times. It reminded me of a greater purpose and the strength to persevere. Additionally, the support and encouragement from my mentors and colleagues have been invaluable. Their belief in me fuels my determination to overcome the challenges I face. Looking back, I remember the words of one of my wonderful lecturers Oluwafemi Omotayo in school when we were treating the topic 'Resilience' under the course, Strength of Materials. He highlighted that just like Engineering materials, we humans, have the ability to withstand stress without deforming (or breaking down). This is only possible if we're resilient - Having a solid backup when you're most vulnerable. A quote by Samuel Dare in one of his posts which says, 'Your breakthroughs are in the consistency of what you do daily, so you need to keep showing up everyday' has resonated within me. To continue to show up, picking yourself up even when you fall, not giving up and encouraging yourself in God always... This is what makes you resilient. Through it all, I have learned that adverse challenges are not roadblocks but rather opportunities for growth. By embracing the storm, I emerged stronger, more resilient, and even more passionate about my chosen field. Have you ever faced a similar challenge in your career? The National Association of Women in Construction began the tradition of the first week of March being a celebration of the ladies in our industry. We at Force love a reason to highlight our amazing teammates. Today we want to recognize Kelly Brinson, P.E., a Project Manager in our Force Construction team. Kelly is a Purdue grade and licensed Professional Engineer. We are excited to share her answers to a few questions on why she enjoys being part of the built environment. 1. How did you decide on your career? “I’ve always enjoyed watching a project come to life and I’ve always been a Boilermaker fan so when it came time to apply to college and to decide on what I wanted to do with my future; Civil Engineering at Purdue seemed the perfect fit. Throughout my time in college and with various internships, I found my joy came from interacting with customers and overseeing work on site versus crunching numbers and designing. Project management has given me the ability to combine all of my favorite aspects and pull knowledge from my engineering background.” 2. How long have you been in the construction industry? “Nearly 11 years” 3. What do you like about being in the construction industry? “The construction industry provides a wide variety of projects that keeps each day unique and intriguing. Not only are you continuously learning about construction related activities, but you are learning the ins and outs of how your customers products are made and the intricacies of each business.” 4. How long have you been with Force? “Nearly 11 years. I started with Force directly after I graduated; very green and hardly spoke a word. I’ve grown a lot over the last 11 years, and I’ve worked around a lot of great people here and have learned from them invaluable knowledge that no amount of schooling can teach.” 5. What advice would you give to young women thinking or to get them to think about construction? “Go for it! Construction is an industry that offers a wealth of opportunity and does not have a single “right” path to take.
