Therapy or facility dogs help agencies enhance officer wellness and resilience by assisting those recovering from trauma. These dogs provide a sense of calm and safety, offer support without judgment, and can help the healing process. In addition to one-on-one interactions, dogs may also attend funerals, memorials, and critical incident debriefs. Learn strategies for incorporating dogs into your new or existing wellness programs in IACP’s new resource, The Impact of Dogs on Resilience, developed in collaboration with the Bureau of Justice Assistance. https://bit.ly/3H2FBoT #OfficerSafetyandWellness #OfficerWellness #OfficerResilience #LawEnforcementWellness

A Public Service Announcement from Mother Goose… Never, ever let your children or grandchildren swim alone and unattended! From the Stop Drowning Now website, a thread entitled, “Facts & Stats About Drowning” @ https://lnkd.in/eyyJ_2iV Here’s a snippet… In the US, an average of 3,500 to 4,000 people drown per year. That is an average of 10 fatal drownings per day. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-4. Drowning remains in the top 5 causes of unintentional injury-related death from birth to 5 years old. Twenty-three percent of child drownings happen during a family gathering near a pool. Drowning is the cause of death for most boating fatalities. It’s estimated that another 5 to 10 people receive hospital-related care for nonfatal drowning injuries for every fatal drowning victim. Children younger than one-year-old are more likely to drown at home. Eighty-seven percent of drowning fatalities happen in home pools or hot tubs for children younger than 5. Most take place in pools owned by family or friends. Children 5 to 17 years old are more likely to drown in natural water, such as ponds or lakes. #mothergoose #swimmingsafety

📢 This was too important to me to not post it on LinkedIn. The scorching 110F/43C temperatures in Arizona have been relentless this summer, and therein lies an ominous danger: children left in hot cars. In my years in healthcare, I've seen the devastating impact of such preventable tragedies. I’ve also wondered, how could that happen? It’s not as simple as you think. Researchers have found that deviations from a routine increase the likelihood of a parent (or grandparent!) forgetting about a child in a vehicle. You can take these simple steps to prevent such tragedies: ↳ Always keep your car locked even if you don't have children. ↳ Keep your keys out of children's reach. ↳ Teach children how to honk the horn if they are trapped. ↳ Place an essential item that you won’t forget such as your purse, wallet, or phone in the back seat with the child. ↳ If a child is missing, immediately check the inside and trunk of all cars in the area first. ↳ If you see a child alone in a car, ensure they are okay and call 911 if any concern. P.S. Many states’ Good Samaritan laws protect you if you need to break a window to save a child! Are there other ideas that people have? #ChildSafety #PreventHotCarDeaths

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘀' 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀 In the chars, where the simple act of cooking weaves into the fabric of daily life, the ground-set wood-burning stoves tell a tale of warmth and risk. This environment, while fostering familial bonds over meals, also shadows a cautionary note for its youngest members, who play unaware of the dangers. Burn injuries are often a step away. Our narrative seeks to illuminate this issue, advocating for enhanced safety measures and awareness to safeguard the vibrancy of these communities. #CommunitySafety #FirePrevention #ChildSafety #AwarenessCampaign

𝟮𝟱 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 “World Drowning Prevention Day, declared through the April 2021 UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/75/273 “Global drowning prevention”, is held annually on 25 July. This global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. An estimated 236,000 people drown every year, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years. More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells, domestic water storage vessels and swimming pools in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.” (Source: WHO; https://lnkd.in/g3Q4KNb; accessed on 23 July 2024) CONSILIO ET OPERA supports the initiative of World Health Organization. #worlddrowningpreventionday #consilioetopera

Turning vision into action, influencing positive evolution in healthcare, raising good humans, swimming and backpacking.
A recurring nightmare I had when my children were first born was losing one of them under the surface of the water. Even now, thinking about that dream sends a shiver through my body. Knowing that over 4,000 people will live that reality in the US this year is infuriating. Why talk about #drowning on a professional networking site? Because the #healthcare leaders of today and tomorrow must embrace fostering and safeguarding health. Access to swim lessons, for both children and adults, is a critical life skill we can all promote. A great example is the Make a Splash Foundation, which provides free swim lessons to underprivileged children. Are there similar initiatives in your area? How can healthcare professionals support greater access to swim lessons and water safety? Let's work together to prevent these tragedies and promote safety for all. https://lnkd.in/gsN-R2M6

Today we raise awareness about the disastrous and long-term effects of drowning on both families and society while also informing us about life-saving ways to prevent it. Drowning is a serious and neglected public health threat claiming the lives of 372 000 people a year worldwide. It is usually more common among children who are aged five to 14. It is urgent to teach our kids how to swim, tell them about water safety, and make sure we all know more about rescue and resuscitation methods. Putting children and families first in Philadelphia means not forgetting about their furry family members. The neighborhoods surrounding the families we serve aren't the most environmentally equitable, which can impact the mental health of both individuals and groups. This is detrimental to someone's physical health, as we've discussed in-depth in the ACEs study thanks to Dr. Nadine Burke Harris. I'm grateful to be a part of the C.A.R.E Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity team and their holistic approach to their mission. The stats on how many animals are currently displaced and how many of them could be in loving homes is staggering. Allowing families to provide the love they have to offer to animals would be impactful to the mental health of children, families and communities. We know that our government and systems in place push for policies and legislation that don't benefit the communities we seek to transform. By shifting restrictions to housing animals and allowing organizations like CARE to support families with resources, we can sustain the well-being of both the animal and the family. While we work on challenging housing policies, human and animal well-being, and other inequities, we have the power to create neighborhoods that we all want to be a part of and live in. Neighborhoods that we would be comfortable and feel safe enough to walk our animals and raise our families. We have a rare opportunity here, not just for Philly but for other cities as well. Let's work together with like-minded organizations to create a brighter future for all. #childrenfirst #familyfirst #humananimalwellbeing #communitytransformation #strongertogether Let's work together!
