To many, January 26 represents a history of dispossession, racism and colonialism -- and the associated modern realities of black deaths in custody, the gap in health and life expectancy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, shocking Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth detention statistics, and more. This ANTAR piece outlines three main lines of thought regarding January 26: Change The Date, Abolish The Date, and Reframe The Date. https://lnkd.in/gDQYCXD3

Rogers, M. L. (2015). David Walker and the Political Power of the Appeal. Political Theory, 43(2), 208-233. https://lnkd.in/gKXURMEd Abstract: David Walker’s famous 1829 Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World expresses a puzzle at the very outset. What are we to make of the use of “Citizens” in the title given the denial of political rights to African Americans? This essay argues that the pamphlet relies on the cultural and linguistic norms associated with the term appeal to call into existence the political standing of black folks. Walker’s use of citizen does not need to rely on a precognitive legal relationship precisely because it is the practice of judging that illuminates one’s political, indeed, citizenly standing. Properly understood, the Appeal aspires to transform blacks and whites, and when it informs the prophetic dimension of the text, it tilts the entire pamphlet in a democratic direction. This is the political power of the pamphlet; it exemplifies the call-and-response logic of democratic self-governance. #Alkebulan #Rise #Ubuntu

This essay, along with the mini-doc below, are parts of a project commissioned by the International Center for Transitional Justice examing the intergenerational effects of lynching across the state of Maryland https://lnkd.in/e7TNy2yj
One of the last known lynchings in Maryland happened in Salisbury in 1931, when Mathew Williams was attacked by a racist mob, hanged and his body was dragged to the Black community and set afire. Now the city has finally decided to apologize, and the city council is expected to ratify it on Monday. Many in the community think the apology falls short and doesn't address the intergenerational effects of what is described as an act of racial terror. In 2021 I was commissioned to produce a mini documentary and photo essay on the legacy lynching across the state by the International Center of Transitional Justice. I traveled from Cumberland to Salisbury and in between to interview descendents, activists and other stakeholders. You can see the 7 minute mini-doc at the link below https://lnkd.in/eYugndMK

Today, we pause to reflect on Juneteenth – also known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day. It marks a cornerstone in American history: the abolition of slavery and the long-awaited enforcement of emancipation in the last Confederate state. #Juneteenth #weservetennesseans

Rev. Wylie Hughes and I discuss: - The Black-Jewish Alliance - what happened to it and how to revive it? - Public Discourse - can civil conversation return to civic life? - The illiberal Left - can we revive liberalism among progressives? The answers - only when we pull apart the Gordian knot of White Supremacy, American misogyny and patriarchy, and anti-Indigenous genocide, for a start. https://lnkd.in/engUqNiW

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the end of slavery in the United States. This day, known as Juneteenth, has since been celebrated as a symbol of freedom and the end of one of the darkest chapters in American history. As we approach Juneteenth this year, I am committed to using my platform to educate and raise awareness about the lasting impacts of slavery and systemic racism on American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS). I will be sharing information and insights throughout the day to shed light on harmful policies created by legislation in the United States government that continue to disproportionately affect ADOS communities. I look forward to engaging with you all on this important day and continuing the discussion beyond Juneteenth. Let us honor the past while working towards a better future. #policychange #ADOS
