About us

We educate, mentor, exhort, model, and support intentional Catholics in the creation of a virtuous, entrepreneurial society. We believe: 1. The key objective of business activity is serving the human person and the common good. Therefore, business is intrinsically person-centered. 2. Business is fundamentally other-directed and thus must create value for customers and society. 3. Business is a noble vocation that is for its practitioners a key part of their path to holiness – through our creativity in business we participate in God’s creative power. 4. The practice of virtue among all participants in a company contributes to its success. 5. Everyone in a company ought to "think like an owner," and ideally prepare to be or become one. 6. Entrepreneurship is not simply or only about starting a company, but as Michael Gerber, the “SME Guru” and author of “The E-Myth” says, the practice of mature entrepreneurial perspective – the guiding light of any successful business. 7. Catholic Social Teaching principles are a key mental model to guide the decision process of successful entrepreneurs. 8. The Market Based Management approach ensures that companies promote and retain an entrepreneurial perspective throughout their growth. 9. The economy and business are not a zero-sum game. Principled Entrepreneurs think from a perspective of abundance and do not engage in an “us-versus-them” mentality, because the solution to most problems is “both/and.” 10. Entrepreneurship is a key ingredient in a healthy and well-functioning society as it occupies the space between individuals and the state.

Helping Entrepreneurs find meaning in and through their work

🚀 Attention to my startup founders and business leaders network 🚀 As a professor at The Catholic University of America's Busch School, I've had the privilege of working with some incredibly driven and talented students. Several of them, now graduates from our program, are looking for full-time positions in companies where they can continue to grow, contribute, and thrive. The student's I have in mind are highly motivated, proactive, and embody the can-do attitude that startups and growing businesses need. They have a solid foundation in business principles, have started a business as a part of our program, and are eager to apply their skills, while continuing to learn and adapt. I know the impact that a great team member can make in an organization, especially early on. If you have any open roles (especially those with growth potential), I’d love to connect you with them. I am confident they will add value to any team that invests in them. Please reach out if you’re hiring or know someone who is. Let’s find a great fit for these talented professionals! Thank you in advance for your help. 🙏 #Hiring #Startups #Business #TeamGrowth #Opportunity #BusinessSchool #Buschschoolofbusiness #CUA

  • This is from earlier in the semester, but Cecilia Brennan you'll be happy to hear that just yesterday a student told us he'd tweaked his strategy after remembering something he learned from you. It sticks!

Loved guest lecturing for Andreas Widmer entrepreneurial class this morning at CUA’s Busch Business School. We talked about social media - specifically the downside of viral content. But isn’t that the goal of social media, to go viral? Wrong. Viral content is fun, but it doesn’t grow an engaged audience. It rarely converts sales. And it doesn’t build trust or respect of the brand. Followers and views does not equate to sales. I worked with a woman who had 2million followers. She sold 2 $30 products. I worked with a different woman who had 40k followers. She sold $60,000 of the same product. What was the difference? Trust & respect.

Hey everybody, I'm excited to announce some big news about the app that Will Simone and I have been creating at DeeSimone, Inc. Throughout our experience at The Catholic University of America, Will and I worked with DC bars and restaurants on their social media marketing. Thanks to our peers we were able to see success in supporting local businesses, hosting events and bringing people together. Over the past three years we have been working to expand this sense of community to the rest of DC. We are finally able to announce that we will be introducing the closed beta test for our new app, Hoppin. I invite whoever sees this post to check out our website and register to receive updates on our progress and beta test. Keep an eye out for an invite to create your account, secure your username and be the first to check out our platform! I would like to give a special thanks to everybody at the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship for their mentorship along with our family, friends, advisors and classmates who support and believe in this project.

  • We recently had the pleasure of recording interviews for an upcoming video on the Röpke-Wojtyła Fellowship. We were thrilled to welcome Kathryn Linz and Luke Schafer back to campus, along with alumna Sammy Philips, who is pursuing her Master’s in Public Policy while working at the Busch School. To cap off the week, Dr. Sautet hosted a lovely dinner at at Tortino, one of the late Michael Novak’s favorite DC spots, with 2024 fellow Helen Schlueter joining the group. Stay tuned for more! #RopkeWojtylaFellowship #BuschSchool #TortinoDC

  • Welcome to our new Ciocca Center board members, Mike Bianco and Mike Shaughnessy! These accomplished individuals have stories worth sharing full of taking risks, learning from failure, and winning in tough markets. Thank you Mike— and Mike!— for believing in us and helping push the Ciocca Center forward. 💡🤝 Meet Mike Bianco Mike Bianco graduated from Franciscan in 2011 with a degree in Mathematics and Economics. After a couple of failed business ideas, he built a technology company (SuiteSync) to automate accounting processes for enterprise companies. In a little over two years, he hired a small team, sold the software to companies like IndieGoGo and Glassdoor, and was acquired by the largest privately held company in the country—Stripe. After working for Stripe for a couple of years, Michael recently left to build his next business. Mike and his wife Emily have been married for nine years, live in Denver, CO, and have four young children. — Meet Mike Shaughnessy Mike Shaughnessy is the retired co-chairman and president of ColorMatrix. He and his business partner acquired full ownership of a small plastics colorant manufacturer joint venture that became ColorMatrix in 1985. In May 2006, Mike sold ColorMatrix to Audax, at which time he became co-chairman until the sale of the business in December 2011. Mr. Shaughnessy currently serves on the advisory boards of three private equity funds and is an investor in those funds. He has served on numerous nonprofit boards, most notably The Catholic Community Foundation, Urban Squash (co-founder & emeritus), The Western Reserve Land Conservancy (former), Notre Dame College (emeritus), Greater Cleveland Squash Association (emeritus), and White North Stables (former).

  • Thank you to Aviva Lund for joining our Vocation to Business classes Tuesday morning to tell them how to get the most out of the Optimal Work mastercourse our freshmen use to convert damaging stress into the ability to work in “flow state.” It’s a tremendous tool they’ll use the rest of their lives. #optimalwork #flow #vocationofbusiness #virtue #catholic #catholicuniversity
