Educate future Catholic intellectuals and business leaders in the study of the market order and Catholic social thought.
About us
The Röpke-Wojtyła Fellowship is a program hosted by The Catholic University of America for Catholic undergraduate seniors from any institution across the United States. The purpose of the program is to educate future Catholic intellectuals and business leaders in the study of market order and social thought — and in particular Catholic social thought as it compares to more secular scholarship. Throughout the year, the fellows will discuss topics in history, philosophy, political economy, politics, and sociology. The Röpke-Wojtyła Fellowship is a call on young Catholics to explore important questions of social philosophy, such as the makings of a good society, the civilizing aspect of commerce, and the tensions between markets and community. The Fellowship also aims to encourage the next generation to critically engage intellectual traditions and authors they might not otherwise encounter during their studies. These include the Church Fathers on trade, the medieval debates on commerce and the economy, the origins of property, the impact of labor value theory on social movements, the critiques of political economy, Wilhelm Röpke's assessment of the social framework for the market order, and Karol Wojtyła’s philosophy of the human person and of human action. Röpke-Wojtyła Fellowships are awarded to outstanding senior level undergraduate students majoring in a variety of disciplines. Fellows participate in four colloquia throughout the year. At all these events, students interact with exceptional and inspiring scholars.

"Because Michael Novak's understanding of politics [in The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism] rests upon the freedom of conscience and its ensuing pluralism, it cannot be oriented around a core set of human goods (apart from the good of the freedom of conscience). Democratic capitalism as a political system can harness vice, but it cannot shape the moral culture." This is a quote from Helen Schlueter's essay draft, which criticizes Novak's book using John Finnis's approach to new natural law. While not everyone agreed with her thesis, she made quite an impression on the group. We recently had our last Röpke-Wojtyła Fellowship colloquium online in which we discussed the fellows' essay drafts. Another extremely special and unique moment from our trip to Rome together… For the first time in RWF history, two Fellows fell in love… they met during our first Colloquium in D.C. back in October, and he proposed to her on Piazza San Pietro, on a beautiful morning during our Roman Colloquium in June… So there you go: the Röpke-Wojtyła Fellowship changes lives in more ways than one, and these two birds will remember it forever… felicitazioni!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Raleigh Adams, Ian Crossey, Abraham Figueroa, Merlot Fogarty, Ryan Gapski, Elizabeth Gracon, Patrick Hyland, Natalia Ibarra, Victoria Lyczak, Eamonn Newton, Shea Nowicki, Helen Schlueter, Lauren Witt, Broderick Zywan, Flavio Felice, Robert A. Two special moments that we shared together during our Rome colloquium: - we visited the Swiss Guards’ barracks in the Vatican; - we had a lunch-discussion of Plutarch's Julius CÆSAR at the Ristorante Da Pancrazio which has walls that were part of the Pompey Theatre, where Julius Cæsar was assassinated. Our third Röpke-Wojtyła Fellowship colloquium, which took place in Rome (June 5-12), was a complete success. We had a fantastic time filled with discussions and debates, prayers, masses, sharing of meals, and contemplation of the beauties of Rome. Our themes of discussion included scholastic economics, political economy and its critics, Catholic social thought (especially the nature of labor and the role of business), Wilhelm Röpke’s humane economy project, and Michael Novak’s book The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism. See pictures of the fellows in a classroom on Catholic University Rome campus, walking throughout Rome, in the Vatican Museum, and at mass in the Chapel of the Madonna of Partorienti in the Grotto of St Peter’s Basilica. Thank you to all the fellows for their enthusiasm and hard work. Thank you to Kate Schulz for her support, and to the scholars, Dr. Flavio Felice, Fr. Robert A. Gahl, Jr., and Dr. Max Torres for their guidance and wisdom. And thank you to Dr. Frederic Sautet for his leadership. Honored to assist Dr. Sautet as he shepherds these talented young people around the eternal city!
The RW Fellows are in Rome, the highlight of our time together. The theme of our first session was "Scholastic Economics" during which we discussed the viewpoints of Aquinas, Bernard of Siena, Antonino of Florence, and others on economic value, price, and love. Then Fr. Robert A. Gahl, Jr. said mass at San Girolamo Della Carità in the private chapel of San Filippo Neri. Thank you to Fr. Bob and to the sisters for this wonderful moment of prayer and thanksgiving.
