Four years after successful bariatric surgery at ChristianaCare, Shellee Chew is living the active lifestyle that she always wanted. Whether she’s hiking, walking along the coast or participating in a 5K walk, Chew is amazed at the things she can do now. She and a group of peers who had bariatric surgery at ChristianaCare rely on each other for positive encouragement. The emotional support has helped Shellee see herself in a new light: Previously, she lived life cautiously because of her weight, with self-imposed restrictions. Now, nothing is off limits. Masonic Charities of Delaware, represented by one of their Board Members, Fred Roland, stopped by today to present us with a 10,000$ check to support the cutting-edge research we conduct here at the Helen Graham Cancer Center. The group has given $80,000 over the last six years! Thank you! #christianacare

To help celebrate International Translation Day, interpreters from Language Services at ChristianaCare hosted resource tables at Christiana and Wilmington Hospitals. Caregivers had the opportunity to meet our interpreters, learn about our virtual translation systems and understand how documentation for an interpreter is filled out. We are thankful for the Language Services team’s commitment to breaking down healthcare barriers for our community members. Their work helps patients have their voices heard and feel comfortable during their medical visits. Medical Interpreters are available in over 200 languages for patients to utilize during their visit. All limited English proficiency and deaf patients are entitled to a qualified medical interpreter free of charge. Call 302-733-1861 or email [email protected] to request an interpreter for your language. Can you believe it! Almost 200k$ raised and it’s only the third iteration of this event! A great big thank you to everyone who made this possible. The cancer center caregivers and all our patients truly appreciate this! I am looking forward to seeing 800 participants or even more next year!😁
On Sept. 29, more than 500 runners and walkers laced up and got moving for the 3rd annual Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute 5K Run/Walk at ChristianaCare’s Newark campus. Sporting bright tulle tutus, pink race shirts, fanciful streamers and pom-poms, the record number of registered participants raised more than $170,000, exceeding the race goal of $150,000. Proceeds will help cancer patients who struggle with food insecurity. ChristianaCare’s Community Health Outreach and Education and Cancer Care Management teams actively work to address nutrition security with programs that assist patients in accessing fresh produce and making healthy food choices. Very much enjoyed participating on a panel at Health Evolution Connect last week with Brian D. Pieninck and Miles Snowden on “The Quest for Commercial Risk: Discoveries on How to Unlock Win-Win Arrangements.” I shared some of the work that Nicholas Moriello and I are leading at our respective organizations around value-based payment for Commercial populations.

Homelessness can impact both physical and mental health, and make accessing medical care difficult. As a result, people experiencing homelessness often face higher rates of poor health outcomes than people with housing. For the next topic in our Toughest Questions in Health Care series, we ask Dr. Benjamin Golden and Dr. Ashley Panichelli, "How can health care impact homelessness?" Our research at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute at ChristianaCare is having an impact! The just published American Cancer Society biennial report on breast cancer statistics referenced our work on the link between environmental exposures and triple-negative breast cancer risk. Earlier this year, the US Preventive Services Task Force also referenced our research in JAMA when updating their guidelines on breast cancer screening. It is gratifying to be able to contribute to the evidence base that will inform our collective efforts to end breast cancer disparities.
